Scandinavia

There are always surprises to traveling, and having balmy weather (wearing sandals and a skirt) in March in Scandinavia was quite the surprise to both JJ and I. It's really been absolutely beautiful here and we are greatful for that, not having to layer on clothes (although that does make our pack smaller) or keeping our feet in self-contained, ( Read more... )

I would bring candles
They help you focus when your mind is racing over the things you have seen
They also make wonderful gifts
they are instant odor eaters (well the scented ones are)
They are consumable - as they burn, they go away

I prefer the small travable tealight variety but any would do

Candles are a great travel companion, and certainly not practical - good answer!

We could have certainly used the odor eaters on this trip, it's amazing how stinky some bathrooms can get...

alright you attention craved backpacker. If I had to carry one thing across Europe, it would have to be my knitting needles of course! I can barely put them down. I wake up in the morning and think about how much work I have to do before I can get back to knitting. And if you like going barefoot, check out these: http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/

I just got a pair and I love them!

You are such a girl Evan! But it certainly is a good thing to keep you occupied on long train rides.

Still got to check out that website...

Molly reminded me of something Thor and I do. we have a little grey stuffed tabby we call Arthur who goes on trips with us and we take pictures of him everywhere. He has a blog that we've never posted but hope to do it soon.

Does that count?

Hi Emily, I think I would take a pen and a thick notebook. I could write a book from my memoirs and make some money-ya think? Write while the memories are fresh because you lose a lot after so long. I do like the olive oil but chopsticks?? I don't find their weather strange. Where are they on the longitude and latitude and compare it to the states. The jet stream has been inverted so it would be there. Where it is usually warm is cold and vis e versa. Today is a cold blustry cloudy day. I have buds on my tulips and dafodils. Were the tulips budding, beginning to bud or not up at all in Denmark? Thinking of you as we bought the cadbury eggs. Love, Mom

Mom - I clearly stated something that was NOT practical. Pen and paper are of course essential to every backpacker. We have been keeping a serious day by day journal, and I know it'll be great to have in the future when we can barely remember everything we have seen.

I think the Scandinavia is up along where Canada would be, so it definitely seemed like it should have been colder in March. But we certainly are enjoying this beautiful weather, it's a great reprieve from earlier months.

And wow! I could kill for a cadbury egg right now!

It took me a while to figure out what I would bring with me travelling. I usually always bring some sort of stuff animal as my travelling companion. It was always my funshine bear and then Sariah came along, so I had to move to something smaller. Therefore, I wanted to say another little animal, like Eeyore, but that is extra padding in the backpack that is really unneccesary.
After some time, it came to me. I was emptying my purse, when it fell out and I knew exactly. My little hotwheels car. I carry it in my purse everywhere, all the time. So why would I leave it at home while travelling?! Instant entertainment! Everybody likes a good set of wheels!
Missing you and love you lots!!

That's awesome - there are so many things you could race a car on when you are traveling. I almost brought the little bouncy ball I keep in my purse, but decided against it. Too bad too, because it actually makes for a great sink stopper.

missin you too!
