I'll tell you a great book in return, OK? It's called Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts. It's just over 900 pages long and it's the most incredible novel I've read for a long time. It's based heavily on the life of the author, which makes it even more amazing. Really intelligent and original and hard to put down and, well, I haven't finished it yet, but it might end up being my favourite book ever.
I couldn't resist Googling the title you gave. Were the authors William McDonough & Michael Braungart? It looks awesome, I'd like to read it. Hugs xo
oh I read that book too Damo! I learnt such a lot about India and about life in the slums, but the author, or the 'voice' of the author, annoyed the hell out of me. He is such a FIGJAM. Bloody crooked drug dealer with a heart of gold?? But you're right, it was an awesome read - I couldn't put it down and read until the wee hours, then went to work with a literary hangover every day until I finished the damn thing! Is this what's stopping you from studying for your next exam, pray tell?
Hey, that's what my housemate Matt #3 said after he'd read it. I disagree completely, I think he's still an honourable person. Like he says, honour and virtue are two different things. You're wrong about him being a drug dealer, too. He was a heroin user, but in the closing chapters he argues against the introduction of heroin, pornography and prostitution into his mafia council's area. My problem with the narrator was that I couldn't tell how closely he resembled the author. It's obviously highly autobiographical, but at the same time it's a novel, and classed as fiction. The plot worked too well for it to mirror his own life exactly, so I was left wondering which bits he rearranged or added in, and which bits happened to him.
Yes, it is what's been stopping me from studying. I didn't listen to my mother - she's read it too and warned me. You needn't worry though; I finished it last night and I can get in a good two hours before my exam now.
