I hate cash shop style extra content for console based games. Free online games are okay to do that because they need money to stay afloat. Big Companies? No... Seriously you're pushing it. Similar rant for MMOs you pay and then pay subscription fees.

I don't like this new console era so much...

DLC is now a fact of life, because people still buy it. I've bought some, because it was optional. Extra items etc.

It's still a terrible idea, though.

In previous console generations, a lot of content that is considered "paid DLC" nowadays would have been considered "unlockables."

There's also the fact that with PC gaming, for the most part, additional content for a game is released for free (exlcuding expansion packs or shop items in free-to-play MMOs).
But, perhaps it's because of how different PC gaming is from console gaming. To develop on a console, you need buy a license from the hardware manufacturer. For PC, a developer and publisher can put their game out without having to pay anyone to use the platform. Hell, developers can completely bypass publishers by self-publishing games digitally.

Let's make a fighting game with only one character available and you have to pay for who you want on your character select roster! Oh and you have to pay for stages and music too because all you get is a closet to fight inside. And this is from an existing popular franchise so fan people will pay money for it no matter what.

Now, see, if we're going down that route, they need to rethink the cost, not the method.
