They use tax software. I have suggested that from henceforth, they switch to an accountant. They have not yet spoken with a lawyer, though I'm also encouraging them to at least look into it and possibly appeal.
I wish I had advice other than what's already been said (other than perhaps getting legal advice as cheap as/if possible from a lawyer who could give you a consultation). Other than that, consider it done. :)

More Mundane Method I'd Suggest Is A Good Accountant. Even A Mediocre Would Should Be Able To help Them Deal With That Situation.
