My parents are extraordinarily pessimistic. My Mother is definitely a "the glass is half empty" sort of person, while my Father's motto is, "The glass is half full, but with the wrong stuff." Honest to God, he says that

They use tax software. I have suggested that from henceforth, they switch to an accountant. They have not yet spoken with a lawyer, though I'm also encouraging them to at least look into it and possibly appeal.

I've been using H&R Block for the past couple of years and they've done a decent job of keeping my finances in order.

More Mundane Method I'd Suggest Is A Good Accountant. Even A Mediocre Would Should Be Able To help Them Deal With That Situation.

I wish I had advice other than what's already been said (other than perhaps getting legal advice as cheap as/if possible from a lawyer who could give you a consultation). Other than that, consider it done. :)
