Hmmm. They are not bad, that's for sure, but compared to some actually great literature they seem pretty overappreciated at the moment. I share your mourning: the fantasy world and its characters had a chance to become unforgettable literature, but forcing it into a simplisistic good/evil mold will make short work of that.
But 'it ain't over till it's over'. I keep reminding myself that its supposed to be a children's book. I think it got re-categorized after Cedric died.
However, that's really not an excuse in my opinion. Children need more books with complex moral issues and multi-faceted characters - adults underestimate their ability to deal with such things (that's my opinion, anyway). Of course, I read adults' books even before I went to school so perhaps I am a bit different from a typical kid...
I love Ron Weasley!jariketAugust 17 2004, 00:28:31 UTC
Maybe I lucked out. I worked in a book store during the height of the Harry Potter craze. I loathed Harry Potter for years! All those little bastards pestering me every time we sold out.
My boyfriend persuaded me to go see the first film. I stopped hating Harry Potter but still had no real inclination to read the books. After over a year of pestering Aaron (the boyfriend) persuaded me to read them. I loved them. Ron Weasley is my new favorite thing.
My point is I had zero expectations for the books. I believe that is why I loved them. The plot was simple at points but I never stopped enjoying myself.
I have never read any Harry Potter slash so I can't compare the two.

It's nice if you like it. It is by no means *bad*! Ron is really not my thing... I mean, he can be funny and all, but doesn't really touch me the way Draco and Snape do.
I know this feeling... I really prefer the ffs and especially most of the fandon Dracos. In the book, he has absolutely no personality and is just a... in german it's called a softegg ;) But I think I will read the next books anyway, because I hate not to finish something I started...

Draco and Snape could be *so* developed. I get very frustrated. It's very much a love/hate relationship between me and JKR. Seriously.
But yes, read the books. They are good, for what they are. I will forever mourn what they *could* have been, however.

And yes, I hope she'd just keep writing and stop moralizing and belittling her fans. (If I can even be called that any more).
I tell you what, I'll wait until my friends have read the next book and ask if a rabid Draco fan can handle what ever happens in it...
