Part of why it's innovative is not so much on a story level (though, really, when is the last time you could remember most of the female characters in a comedy and the guys were practically interchangeable?), but on the business side of it. The project was funded by the Apatow universe, which as far as financial powerhouses was a big step. Female writers getting front and center was a big thing (honestly, how many screenwriters can most of us even name, as compared to actors/directors?). There were also a lot of female written/driven projects that were ... well, I won't say held hostage, but waiting for funding, because execs wanted to make sure they got their revenue back, so they kept saying: "Well, let's see how 'Bridesmaids' does." Completely unfair? Yes. But a female-driven movie written by women for women being as huge a financial success as this was, and greenlit by a big cashcow being a financial success? It can amount to a watershed moment in a business. Even if it's starting off with fart jokes. :)
