Krispy Kreme Invasion

Aug 09, 2005 09:16

I remember the first time someone told me about Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Firstly back then you could only get them in America so they had a sense of mystique. Secondly the person in question thought they were amazing and explained how they had eaten 3/4 in one go before and still wanted more. They were unobtainable and apparently amazing ( Read more... )

I'm glad you posted that, as I have a similar but as-yet-unshattered sense of mystique about them, and I don't like very sweet things -- so I shall endeavour to avoid them, and thus avoid disappointment.

Maybe the one I had was ridiculously sweet and the others are ok - but the smell of the sugar coming out of the shops is probably enough to get rid of that little theory.

I'm with you - the marketing's great but the actual doughnuts are pretty vile. Too much sweetness, yeuch!

Now on the other hand there's a fabulous baker in Wimbledon and if you go there early enough in the morning their doughnuts are just out of the oven and they taste soooo good...

Of course as a rule I much prefer fried doughnuts to baked, for me doughnuts should have that slightly crispy outside and then the soft stretcy dough inside but baking just doesn't get the same effect.

I think KK doughnuts try to achieve this in a small way by "glazing" some of their doughnuts but it really isn't the same and makes them even sweeter.

Are KK doughnuts actually crispy? That's the thing I've always wondered about them...

Only the ones with a sugar glaze and they are not really that crispy they are covered in a sugar glaze.

Mostly they are just soft baked doughnuts with a lot of powdered sugar and icing and occasionally they are filled with fake cream.

Eeyiw. You see, it's the name that sounds good to me - but it makes me think of a texture that probably isn't what it actually is...

As I said in my post, it is all about the marketing :) The actual product sucks.

Interestingly, whilst I've never eaten a Krispy Kreme donut, I have the opposite association with them.

For me, they are the McDonalds of the confectionery world. Something I wouldn't touch with an exceedingly long barge pole. I've heard dozens of stories from Americans about the "nutritional" properties of these things, too.

Funnily enough you were one of the people I though might actually like them, given how sweet they are.

Surely not. In what way are they nutritious (apart from the fact that everyone needs to eat a small amount of fat in a balanced diet). Do they pump them with vitamin enhanced cream because that wouldn't surprise me.

No, no, it's in quotes because they're horror stories.

might actually like them, given how sweet they are

This is something you've completely made up. I'm more tolerant of sweet stuff than you are, but that's really not difficult !

Krispy Kreme donuts are delicious, and I don't know what you're all on about? But then I have a sweet tooth. They also come in MANY varieties. I must agree that the glazed ones do get a bit too sweet, but some of the filled donuts are fantastic. Favourite is the lemon custard-filled Krispy Kreme.
The outside of the donut is softer than conventional fried doughnuts, and the inside is fluffier. Mmm.

And I beleive it was Mr Harvie who first raved about them to you at the start of a Gaslight session.

Well, it was the first time I'd heard of them, and you were in the room :o)

I had heard about them roughly a year beforehand at which point you actually couldn't get them in the UK I think (therefore increasing their mystique)!
