Anyway, I think tapered trousers are marginally less flattering than 3/4 ones. Go with the cuttings, and tattoo your calves.

None of the above! Get some similar-weight fabric of a colour that goes with the patches, and insert triangular panels in the bottom to turn 'em into flares. Either lots of thin panels, or a couple of fattish ones, depending on which'll look better with those particular trousers.
