well, i have another volunteer opportunity that's come up, finally! the lady i wrote to about working in the library downtown has replied, after i emailed a second time- apparently her email has been down over summer, which explains why she didn't get back to me before. anyways, they need someone to work in the library shop (11-16:30) or bookbar ( Read more... )

Webcams rock. A decent set of headphones and mic are great too... Then when my USB ports got buggered up, I ran out of space for it all ;P

Taht volunteering position sounds fantastic: all those books and all sorts of people, some you'll see regularly and some you won't :) The immigration one might be better all-round job prospects-wise, but I think the library one might be more stable/interesting. And you can leave when you need to, which is the big plus.

Good luck with everything :D

Wow, I had no idea you'd written to people about voluntary work, that's a really good idea, i'm sure they'd be really happy to have someone with work experience working who is willing to work for free. I'm sure that'll work out well, well done you!
I'd personally think quite seriously before cancelling the work with the immigration centre, it sounds like it could be quite rewarding work and if it's in the evening it's less likely to interfer with getting a paid job when your papers come through, though as you say, it means you don't get to see Sasha :( Good luck!

yeh, i started writing to people a couple of weeks after i got here, but the problems have been lack of responses, and then needing police certificates, and an organization which messed me around quite a bit also. it's a relief to finally just get a straight answer, and some work that wouldn't need a police check!
