AO3 Stats

I stole this from sugar_fey and filled it out because I was curious and I wanted to see if there were any patterns. I discovered one, which is a little perturbing and leads me to believe that Dean Wesley Scott knows what he's talking about when he says writing fast is where it's at*.

Skip on to the next one if you're not curious about statistics at all )

chuckfic, chuck, downton abbey, avengers fic, avengers

Wow, I envy your ability to write so much in a short space of time. It takes me forever to write a 2000 word fic!

Yeah. Me too!!!

I've written a couple of quickies in under 2 hours -- usually comment fics -- but nothing longer than 1,200 words, and even then I spent another hour or two more editing the thing ... None of those I have ever published on their own, with the exception of "Bare", mostly because I just didn't think they were good enough.

Some of my faster pieces (two evenings?) like "AfterMath" and "Two If By Land" have done well enough (81 and 74 kudos respectively) , but my top Avengers story ("The Skies over Manhattan", 283 Kudos) took me ... gah, I don't even want to think about how long that took. My problem is, I edit (= rewrite) almost compulsively, and that literally doubles the time I spend on a fic.

PS: You wrote the Bechdel Test in 20 minutes???? Holy shit. I bow before thee.

It's kind of easy to tell how good I think a fic is. If it's my lowest form of writing, it'll just live on Tumblr, which I consider the catch-all place. Fics that are a little bit better get archived on the LJ, fics that I think are actually okay end up on AO3, and then fics that I'm proudest of go on ff-net. There's a whole hierarchy in my mind, based on where my intended audience hangs out. But yeah, most of the short fics I've posted are usually done in less than a day. I've been doing Nanowrimo for years, and I hate the idea of quantity over quality, so I guess I trained myself to write quickly. A lot of that is conditioning myself not to listen to that voice in my head that claims I'm a bad writer, that all of this is crap ( ... )

I've had a lot of practice. I did nothing but write great gobs of stuff for a year while I was unemployed. It always takes me too many words to get to the point, so I'm envious of those writers that can write a 2k story and have it actually mean something. Most of my writing is popcorn writing at best.
