okay i use auto-capping because there are tons of animes i watch that i want to cap but man watching them over again and picking out the right scenes takes FOREVER. so i usually auto cap my stuff (unless its bleach... i always cap the new bleach outright.
okay, ANYWAY. here's a warning first:
if you are intending to make a cap every minute or less and its 30 minutes or more, you probably are going to have to split the file or movie. why? because too many caps and it overloads your system. or at least my system, and what do i know because my computer is 4 years old. you can try doing it, but likely is that it'll slow down your computer MAJORLY.
solution:
i use a program called AVI/MPEG/RM/WMV SPLITTER by boilsoft.com
it's shareware but *COUGHYOUDIDNTSEETHISNEXTPART* you can download serials from serials.ws
you can split the files and its TONS easier to auto-cap
alright, so you're ready now? sweet. lets get on with it.
1. download VLC media player @
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/viola!
2. now DO NOT OPEN THE FILE FIRST!
if you are going to cap a dvd this way (I TOTALLY DO NOT RECCOMEND IT), then go down below this tutorial for another one, which is how to find your movie without 'seeing' the movie.
anyway, if it is a file or you have split the dvd, go ahead.
so go to settings>preferences
this screen comes up. okay i really suggest you unclick 'enable audio' unless you want to hear your video while its autocapping (because you wont see it)
3. okay now click on the + thing beside video so that it looks like this:
don't actually tough anything in this area.. it wont do anything unless you're just watching the movie or manually screencapping. SO in the "video" menu, click on output modules. click the box that says "advanced options" at the bottom. change the dropdown menu in video output mode to Image Video Output
4. now, in the same area, go to image file, under output modules.
image format
you can change it between PNG or JPG. JPG is smaller and takes up less space. PNG is a tad bit better quality, but takes up quite a bit more space. if you're doing over 100 caps, i'd say do it as JPG.
recording ratio
this is how many frames per frame you want capped. so if you used 3, 1 out of every three frames is capped. and thats FRAMES not seconds!!!! there's quite a bit difference. I usually set mine to 10. 10 is good, gets "rare" moments and of course leaves a lot extra you have to delete, but i wouldn't go any less than that unless you want almost frame-by-frame captures. and if you're doing an anime or a movie or tv show, thats a LOT of captures that will take up your harddrive.
filename prefix
this is what goes before the ______.PNG or _____.JPG
if you took my advice and split your files, i suggest you have something in there to indicate what file you're on. for example, on my death note caps i used this:
deathnote01_01
deathnote01_02
deathnote01_03
deathnote01_04
deathnote01_05
deathnote(series)01(episiode#)_01(split video number)
see what i mean? if you're still confused, please let me know in the comments.
you have to of course go into the preferences and change it everytime you open a new video or it'll replace your old ones.
5. now click 'save' (THATS IMPORTANT!)
6. okay now time to load your video or dvd.
although, gah okay, capping dvds in this way is a TAD bit tricker because it'll go to the main menu and you won't be able to see anything and it'll just keep capping the menu over and over. (thats another reason why for dvds i suggest you rip them onto your computer in ISO format and then split the iso, just like you would a file). like i said earlier, if you are capping a dvd, go below this tutorial for another one on how to find your movie without seeing it.
enough blabbing. to open your file go to file>open quick file
go to the folder you saved it under and click on it. it'll automatically start capping by itself!
and it'll look like this:
of course it wont have c:\#stuff\... it'll have your file location and file name.
7. so where did your files go?!?!
thats an easy one. they are in programfiles>VideoLAN>VLC
tada!
there's usually QUITE a few caps. it's tedious but you have to go through each and every one and delete the "bad ones" or repeats. ack now all the numbers are messed up, right? well in psp they have batch programs that run and you can batch rename all your items!
haha okay i hope you've started reading the other tutorial before you've read this or you'll be "HUH??!?!"
because if you follow that tutorial and you're capping a dvd, if you set those settings and load the dvd you'll just cap the menu over and over again. so im going to teach you how to find the movie first so you dont have to stop everything and change back into default mode later.
1. open up vlc
use that button to get to load your dvd or start to. haha
this is what it looks like. this is another way to open a file, but that quick file is just so much easier. anyway, go to the "disc" menu
looks like this. NOW, unless you KNOW what track you want to start on, or you want to cap the whole movie (ack you didn't have to see this do you :X sorry), click on DVD (menus). to cap the whole movie you just hit dvd.
but again if you dont know what track # to start on, go through the menu.
at the bottom where it says customize, thats only if your disc drive is another drive. for example, i have an external dvd burner and thats drive E:\ so i would change it to
dvd://E:
if i were using that. but if its the same, leave it.
now click on OK to load
2. your dvd is playing! yay!
okay now to find your "track"
go to navagation > title
it'll tell you how many tracks are on your dvd. then go to each one to find out where one starts and the other one ends. for my bleach dvd, track #1 is ep 01, track #2, ep 02 and so on.
there! now you can find the track you want while you're "blind" when capping
i'm sorry if that was confusing ^^
