Social Judgement Theory states that people seperate ideas into three categories, called latitudes: the latitude of acceptance, the latitude of rejection, and the latitude of non-commitment. Ideas falling into the first are ones we already accept, ideas falling into the second are to foriegn and are automatically rejected, and ideas in the third are ideas close enough to our own that we neither accept nor reject them.
Basicly, you can only convince someone of something inside their latitude of non-commitment. What this means is people ONLY hear what they want to. On some level, people sort all ideas into "things I want to hear" and "things I don't" and then act accordingly. When people do hear what is actually being said, it is only because they have decided that what is being said is something they already agree with or something they're willing to be persuaded about.
My point is this dude: we're selfish, selfish beings.
