All these news stories are talking about how innovative Radiohead is for releasing their cd for free, yet completely ignoring the fact that bands have been releasing albums online for free for years. Case in point the Smashing Pumpkins Machina 2 was an internet only companion to Machina: Machines of God, because Sony was too afraid to release it as

I think the big thing is that Radiohead and NIN are both no longer signed on to record labels, which actually is pretty new. I don't think the Pumpkins were off their label in 2000, but I could be wrong.
