Existance is futile

That isn't quite the quote I think, but sometimes it feels that way. Not always, just occasionally.
In any case, what happens if I go out and buy a Zoom Q3 Well, a voicepost of course. What better way to celebrate a brand new piece of electronic goodness than to make something stupid to say hiNot much, so that's what I did ( Read more... )

Wow, Nice! I'm impressed! Pitty about the Rf noise in right channel.
So, the obvious question with any camera, is how usable is it for blindies?
Not too bad I take it.

It's rediculously simple. Literally, turn it on and press record. To se the gain level, theres a three-position switch on the side which I mentioned during the demonstration. Bottom position, low gain. Middle, high. Top, auto ( ... )

I think it safely beats the Zoom H2 for audio which is rather amusing in its self, and the auto level is probably the least offencive I've heard, It'd be interesting to see what sort of attack and dekay times that has. So, is getting it in and out of wav mode and the sample rate stuff easy to do as well?
If the menus are anything like the H2, they did tend to start in one spot, so you could count them at a pinch.
As for the other comment re the iriver, Well, I suppose you're never going to get binaural recordings from a single point set of directional mics, but it does pretty well for what it has!
I think the DM520 is probably a match for it too on the built-in mics, although the Irivers pre amps are still slightly better than the olympus machine.
Mind you, the Zoom H2, and the edirol recorders simply aren't even in the race any more!

Well, I've done tests shouting at it with the low gain and it's just really nice. Could hardly hear any hiss in the pre's in there. Surprisingly that it's next to a lens which is next to a CPU doing video stuff, isn't it? If you have some particula tests you think I should do, let me know. Or come on teamtalk and tell me.

Sounds like you got a good camera ! fleurette67 May 4 2010, 10:48:14 UTC
Hi Andre! I've just listened to the voicepost you did on 1 May with your new Zoom Q3, and that thing records brilliantly: in fact, if you hadn't mentioned it was a camcorder, I wouldn't have guessed that, and I must say it recorded better than some audio-only digital recording machines I've heard. The only glitch was that slight buzzing on the right channel at one point, otherwise everything was crystal clear, and the Q3 is impressive, as far as I'm concerned, when it comes to recording low-level sounds such as quiet computer fans. It sounds like this camcorder will get plenty of good use from both you and Kirsten, with her filming and you doing sound recordings with it, in appropriate situations of course. I'm not enough of an expert on sound to know whether the Q3 records better than the I-River which you used to use for voiceposts, but the Q3 is certainly a good alternative, since it can record in sound-only mode, as you pointed out in the voicepost you just did.
