When Sam was little, Grace read him a bedtime story every night. She stopped, around the time he was ten, unless he asked, because he was always reading on his own, anyway, and she figured that he was ten and would probably like reading bedtime stories on his own. Every once in a while, though, he asked, and Grace would happily read to him.

He didn’t even have to ask, though, the night before he left for Stanford. Grace just sat down next to him with a book, and waited a minute for him to finish up what he was doing.
