I'm sick of having this conversation. (Okay, it's only happened twice. I don't talk about this all the time. Really!)

Me: ...so, yeah, I can't believe [so-and-so] didn't know English wasn't a Romance language!
Person I Thought Knew This: English isn't a Romance language?

ENGLISH IS NOT A ROMANCE LANGUAGE. ENGLISH IS A GERMANIC LANGUAGE. Romance ( Read more... )

You just know some stupid people in person. ^.^

I never quite understood how people could think that English was a Romance language. Like you said, you'd think they'd realize that the way it's set up is much more similar to German, which is definitely not a Romance language, either. (That chart for Germanic languages kind of makes me think of the periodic table of the elements. >.> )

Unrelated topic: Lillian got promoted to Senior Editor, Editorial is being restructured like wow, and I'm still waiting to find out where my new desk will be. XD

Honestly I didn't know that because I never thought about it before. I know a lot of our words do have latin roots, but I also know that's after they were like...strained (like cheesecloth) through other languages. It would figure to conclude that English more related to Germanic languages seeing as how they conquered England every five seconds after and before Rome fell.

lol, it's funny cause when I saw this post I first saw the poll options and I was like "Romance...wha? Romance of the Three Kingdoms? What's going on". Had you said "Latin" I would have known exactly what you meant ^_^; I've never heard the concept referred to Romantic before.

I must say, if anyone took high school Spanish or French or German, they should have learned that already. Obviously we don't conjugate our verbs, have accent marks, etc. OBVIOUSLY. And German reads and sounds quite a bit like English sometimes.

RE-TARD. Ugh!

I must say, I'm enjoying 2nd year Spanish through a fire hose.
