LJ idol week 23: the weak force

Sometimes we need something, even if we don't understand why we need it; we just know we do. And sometimes these things that we don't understand are delightful in their abstruseness.

The earth needs the sun. So do we. Even those of you who don't have seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which basically means melancholia ( Read more... )

It is interesting, I have some male friends for whom anything that isn't one of the "hard sciences" or computers is a worthy profession.

I love literature and sociology...find it all fascinating, though I have chosen the former as my field.

This is well done.

Yay literature! I love to read, but could never quite bring myself to like Englis-lit classes. Weird right?

(I think it was something to do with the fact that we hardly ever read anything I enjoyed; it was all Steinbeck and "the classics" that for me are just one big snorefest. heh)

To me...it seems like even "hard" science used to be something that was handled with its sense of wonder and beauty intact. And now even the social sciences are relentlessly having corners broken off to fit in the round pegboard, not just square pegs but triangles and pentagons and all kinds of other shapes. And it frustrates me. (As if "pure experimental conditions" don't create their OWN BIAS, y'know?)

Very astute observation on your behalf. I agree wholeheartedly. Creativity in general is being cut out, regardless of field, and it's a real shame because I think it makes us lose innovation.

I'm a hard-core science geek... and damned proud of it.

But I also love the arts... all of them.

I absolutely love it whenever someone finds a way to blend the two.

Thanks for sharing this.

The thing is, I LOVE hardcore science. Put me in a science museum, or better yet a health/body-type museum, and I can spend HOURS wandering and being fascinated. It's great. But when it came to the drudgery of introductory classes that are specifically designed to weed you out, I just fell short. I agree though - it's great when somebody can blend science and art.

Thanks for reading this! :D

I like the idea of science and art being complementary. Enjoyed seeing the Tim Fowler graphic too.

Kind of like how I don't understand why my brain automatically thinks "Wake up time!" at 5 a.m. in the summer and 7 a.m. in the winter. It just...does.

Mine too. If the sun's up? Then so am I.

I really crave sunlight and warmth. Too many grey days really get me right down.

Summer is coming though! Hopefully we'll both make it through. I think it's supposed to rain pretty much this entire week here. Blech!

I keep forgetting people are on different continents than me. :P The time differences have been especially tricky during intersection weeks.
