I'm a Superman junkie, so there was a LOT of ways this film could have been fucked up in my eyes.
Thankfully though, this film comes through with shining colours. Like you, I really loved all the nods to the original (there are even a few scattered bits of dialogue that gets repeated from the '78 original).
One complaint I heard a lot was that RETURNS was too much talk and not enough action. I don't really see that as the case. The film was seen as rebooting the Superman franchise, and if you're gonna start all over...there's a lot of explaining that has to be done (watch the first X-MEN compared to 2 & 3 for example).
I loved the "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... Clark?" moment haha.
Too much talk and not enough action? Really? I thought they had enough fight/action scenes for what the plot needed. Superman was about solving things without violence as much as possible. I think they rehashed important details pretty well, like when Lois was explaining what Kryptonite was to Richard. Just enough impatience to show that obviously everyone but him knows that haha.
I almost forgot about the great banter between Kitty and Lex. Oh my god. They played off each other spectacularly. "Like sea monkeys?" Hahaha. Or...
Lex Luthor: Kitty, what did my father always say? Kitty Kowalski: You're losing your hair. Lex Luthor: Before that. Kitty Kowalski: Get out?
Classic. Oh and simple touches like in the elevator with Clark and Lois, what a perfect song choice.
