Man this took way too long - for the record I left my volume thirteen at my mother's and just found it again today (YAY!) so I'm back on track.
Volume 13 :: Duel One-Eighteen :: Targets
Last time, on YUGIOH! YnYuugi managed to find a way to beat Slifer with some motivation from Kaiba. But what dramatic scheme does Marik have in store for him now?!
It intrigues me how Slifer kind of "smokes away" instead of breaking into pieces like most holograms. I know it's likely trying to make a point of its significance, but it's cool that it's an identical effect to what happened when BEWD disappeared during the (FIRST) duel (EVER) between YnYuugi & Kaiba. And the point there was that it wasn't holograms, but the Puzzle power summoning spirits, and Sugoroku's BEWD had its own will. So. Does this mean that when a God Card is summoned via duel disk, its 'power' is so strong it's summoning the true spirit of the card? That's pretty spiffy, since we only usually see that in an active Item-powered-duel.
Or it's just a special effect and I'm silly. x3
I'd very much like to get a Marik pov on him transitioning from "Oh wtf I lost" to "keh keh keh didn't even phase me" five pages later. I have a fair idea how it'd go course (likely something involving "oh wait, plan b - I have pharaoh bait lined up") but it'd still be cool to follow the mood train of consciousness.
The fact YnYuugi admits to what a help Kaiba was - and even bigger for this series, doesn't resent not getting it on his own - shows an intriguing humility... I'm not even sure why, as I'm not reaching back to early series memories very well to compare with examples, but it strikes me namely as a fair example of how fandom sometimes paints him far too arrogant, when he's always preached a "live together die alone" attitude. At least for most the time. (And let's just say if we ever get to the end of the series there's going to be one long rant from me not on the actions or outcome of the ending, but the message - related to this note - behind it.)
Kaiba, on the other hand, is arrogant (as shown next page). xD But it's also a fairly acceptable arrogance. He's preaching his own horn a lot, but he's got real skills to back it up, so it's almost like a confident self-awareness.
And Mokuba's adorable as always. I have to say, I love characters like him (as well as him himself) because we need the people that don't believe/stay uninvolved in the magical aspects to keep a level of realism and contrast in the show. Otherwise the fantastical becomes too normal. Now. If only we had a few more non-duelist characters-
And YnYuugi page five, thanks for reminding me you make nearly as many faces as Yuugi does, and that there's more than one time (Yo.) you're more awkward teen than confident pharaoh. I shall have to remember this more in playing you.
It's okay Mokuba- the plot intercedes to put this rivalry of fate face off on hold another five or more volumes.
....I'd make comments about Marik "watching three screens at once" while driving but it's covered pretty well by other people . xD But yes, this scene would be a fine example of why Marik can fit the 'evil mastermind behind the desk petting evil purring cat of doom' image, huh? (Also, am I silly for taking the 'give back my card if friends are at stake' line as a sign that he changes tactics by the time we see the pier scene and thus proof he's really making it up as he goes along? So Indiana Jones of him.)
Woah. YnYuugi, really. Jounouchi and friends are in danger. I know you/Yuugi and him have a bond that make the Guy Love song fittable, but really.
But yes Kaiba, friends over pride. I already spoke of your comparable arrogance. This chapter really is bringing out the themes of the series, and not just for BC.
Yaaaay.... Nameless Ghouls~ Jeez, the unnamed ghouls, tomb keepers, contestants at duelist kingdom- etc. etc. It's fun to think how many people are on the sidelines effected by the plot we don't see. It makes the world feel bigger. Also, I giggle that this "beat us or you can't go on" set up means Marik is making all this into a big old rpg game level.
OMG TAG TEAM KAIBA-YUUGI SO AMAZING THIS WILL BE AN EPIC- how did he summon Obelisk so fast. Darn it Takahashi I can sense we skipped a few turns so it is passable but zipping through after that very loud entrance from Kaiba-- But. Yaaaay, Kaiba just said he wants to wipe out card-counterfeiting. My Piston intermission backstory has canon support!!
Volume 13 :: Duel One-Nineteen :: Everybody Duel!!
Pfff- Marik you get the funnest angles on that bike drive. And I will never know why the Rod-in-the-belt tickles me so much in a non-making-fun-of-way and- Hold on, look at that! We have a clear look at his speedometer and.....108?! That's in- Oh wait that must be KM/hr not mi/hr. So that would equal.... 67 miles per hour................ That's still insane on a motorcycle isn't it?
But yes, moving on. Marik, I am wondering how you equate Ra to Death and Doom. Other than ebil intentions of card.
Also, nice title page art~
Hrm, curious- Either YnBakura is such a great actor even the reader shall not see the transition, or Bakura (and by that I mean Ryou) sensed the Rod presence himself. And played it off... Yet another confusing detail to add to his awareness dilemma.
Ha ha, great example of derpy-freaking-out Jounouchi on Bakura's part. And somehow I'm a lot more curious of his action awareness on this than Ring activity. (Although, now we go back to whether we're looking at Bakura or Bakura-acting-YnBakura. =-= This is why I struggle with writing you~)
Oooooh- suddenly I want to abuse this duel disk searcher feature in the DR. Abuse. Badly.
Also, completely on the side, but with his appearance, anybody got eye-color preferences with the Bakurae? We get variation with most characters, but these two get as much variation as YnYuugi (despite the later having more colored art). I personally like Bakura with aqua eyes and YnBakura with gold/amber. =3 But that's me.
Ha ha, I love that Jounouchi makes Sugoroku pay for random things like tickets, and Anzu's all "oh crap Bakura's gone this equals death" reaction. That girl's a smart cookie.
Jeez Marik run over people. Hey look, YnBakura has karate chop action, now used to steal disks!
Am I bad for not going "Ryota!" But going "Huh, they're 'it's been a long time man!' and 'remember Duelist Kingdom?' could be used for in-canon examples of how much time passes between arcs."
Pfff, one of the loudest duels ever. x3 Although I care for Ryota more than I recalled- He's so "HA HA DO WHAT I WANT F U!" and I see that as activity bait. (Get it? Bait?) Although Jounouchi's clumsy dueling mistakes here take the cake. <3
White-heeled boots eh? I'm messed up that I want to count the nameless Ghouls in the series so I can make a "There are at least x number of Ghouls active" statement. But it's better focusing on that than snickering over curiously worded lines like "Jounouchi. Soon you will be mine!"
OH my, YnBakura & Marik, smirking and threatening each other. This shall be interesting... Next time on Yu-Gi-Oh!
And that concludes volume 13! Now back to tagging drabbles school papers.
