Straight White Male - a new TS Film

I'm featured in this new film, "Straight White Male" a film made by Tyler Erlendson, a young trans guy who is yes, straight, white and even -- a Christian and a conservative! The film features Tyler and a close friend as they journey on their transition from female to male, culminating with Tyler's marriage. Yes, it is legal and considered a ( Read more... )

Any time someone uses the "I'm not being political" argument my eyes glaze over. And just, really, really? Us 'radical' sex-positive transfolk are the bad guys? I'm really tired of hearing the "I'm not with them" argument, and the derisive sexual deviancy tirades.

I mean kudos to him for taking the time to illustrate that just because you're trans, queer, whatever, it doesn't mean you have any common political interest with others in your superficial 'group'. Marxism 101. If he could've done that without the disparaging comments I would be more interested in what he had to say. I'm all for following your life path, whatever that may be, but if that path includes some of this derisive garbage about other sexual minorities and calling other activists freakshows, that doesn't fly well with me at all.

I would not have used that language myself, about "sexual deviants", and I don't actually have any issues with BDSM, but I well understand his frustration that the voices of radical trans people who are anti-binary are so often the dominant ones.

I have not seen the film, and my part is relatively minor, (Jamison Green is in it as well), I am looking forward to it. When we met he came off as fairly sensitive, but also - as unafraid to speak his mind even if that meant offending some and well, I guess he has!

I do think some "activists" are interested in being "freakshows" and put that right out there as something they value. I like "edge" as much as anyone but I find that a bit tiresome after awhile, like after seeing it now for twenty years or more.

I hear you on the language, what I don't understand is the "activist" part - if you truly don't want to be labeled you don't put yourself out there, especially on film. We all know a lot of people will see this film and walk away thinking he's a freak no matter what he says or does he will be lumped into the same box as the people he is trying to escape from.

Anyway, kudos on being in the film, I would love to see it (is it out on DVD?) - still have to get back into reading but I'm so backed up I haven't read anything all summer. Are you coming back to NYC anytime soon, I would love for you to sign my book.
