Every time I see people saying "You're over reacting, he'd not a dictator!" my gut response is "Yet." And the only way to ensure he doesn't become one is to fight back now. Even if Trump were an 'ordinary' conservative, we would need to fight, because his policies are horrendous -- and 'ordinary' conservatives are cheering them on.

I seriously hope that the urge to fight back all over the US doesn't die of fatigue too early, because he sure as hell won't stop. I'll cheer you on... :)

It must be difficult for you to talk with your mom, when at the same you're so devestated about what's happening. How do you cope with your difference of opinion? Do you try to convince her, or do you avoid the subject altogether?

I kind of hope that he comes to Germany soon, so that I can finally GO protest...(damn, I'm still so angry that I missed the sisters march in Frankfurt, even though I googled it the night before!)

I feel for you! It's terrible if something like this comes between you and your loved ones, and I imagine it to be very difficult not to try to put some sense into her every time you see each other...
Hey, on the upside - her reasoning is only shallow, not racist and evil :) .

I hadn't really resolved some issues I had with both my parents before they passed away 10 and 12 years ago, and I still regret it sometimes, so good for you to see it the way you do! Try to focus on the good things - you won't change her anymore.

Thank you for your support! What's happening is really scary. The U.S. government was set up with checks and balances to prevent dictatorship, but we're already seeing examples where the checks and balances are not working. Helping to circulate real news is also helpful, so that people outside the U.S. also understand that it is serious here.

As far as I can see, people do know what is going on here. My 18 year old son knows as much about it as I know, and just yesterday my 12 year old told me they talked in political education at school about it (of course, the ban is something that hits really a nerve, especially here in Germany), even though in 7th grade that's usually not what they do, talking about current politics.
Also, even my first graders know who Trump is. Of course, they are all immigrants...

Thank you for the link. Without descending into full on terror on a weekday morning, I say it's both fascinating and relevant. If I thought about it more, my response would be different, likely less articulate.
Good on you (and kids!) for donating!
Feeling helpless and unhelpful sucks. (Yesterday, I stumbled across a EU programme that organizes up to a year of volunteer work (it wasn't even Trump-related) and had to stop and talk myself out of it for now, mainly because I *just* told my boss I'd keep working in this company for at least a year...)

:D
I recognize this urge to do ANYthing that leads to totally stupid activism (which is not to say that volunteer work is stupid, but you get my drift).

And yeah, not a good 5 am reading.
