Jane was in her favorite place at the BPRD - the roof.  It was the middle of the night, and while the rest of the world slept, Jane was working. She held a small flashlight with her teeth while she took notes on what she observed with the telescope.  She hated the light pollution here; it made it incredibly difficult to see the brightest of stars, ( Read more... )

Lightning cracks through the sky, a ringing crash of thunder heralding his entrance as he lands lightly on the roof behind her. He takes a moment, taking a breath as he steadies himself, adjusting to the fact that he's back, that he's once more on earth, that he's near her once more.

Jane.

"Ever watching the sky," he says, his voice soft but loud enough to carry easily to her across the roof. "Waiting, perhaps, for it to give up its secrets?"

Jane's brow furrows when she hears thunder. That's odd, she thinks. There's no clouds.

She pauses to write down a few thoughts before she loses them, but her hand stops at the sound of his voice. She would know it anywhere, even though it has been long since she last heard it. Her notebook and pencil fall to her feet as she spins around, hardly believing it until she sees him with her own eyes.

Thor.

"Not secrets. You. I was looking for you." She practically sprints over to him to leap up and wrap her arms around him. She exhales with relief. He is real. She's not dreaming. Not this time.

It's a great weight off his chest when she comes to meet him, and as she reaches up for him he laughs, picking her up and swinging her around for a moment, relishing the closeness of her, the solidity to her that had been missing in his daydreams in his time away from Earth. He sets her lightly down on the roof, just on her tiptoes, his arms still around her waist, smiling down at her softly. "Then you have looked and looked well, for you have found me."

She cups his face in her hands and smiles so wide her cheeks hurt. She did not really find him. She'd been looking in the opposite direction. Her mind is swimming with so many things that she wants to say and all of the things she's rehearsed night after night, alone. Now that he's holding her, none of it seems to matter.

"Where have you been?"

He loves that smile, the beauty of it, the sweetness. He leans into her touch, and there's a small note of regret in his smile as she asks him that. "Duties of the Court," he says slowly, voice quiet. "Concerning several matters, all around one key player -- around my brother."

She nodded, indicating that she not only believe him, but that she understood the reasoning. She had never expected for him to abandon his home and family for her and her alone. He had said he would return, and now he had.

"Loki." The doubt that Loki had planted in her mind bloomed now. Surely Thor could see it in her eyes, so she looked away. "He's here. I've talked to him. He said..." She feared to ask for the truth, but she needed it - she needed to hear it from Thor's own lips.

"He said that you were the one who wanted to destroy the Jotun, and that he was only finishing what you started. Is that true?"

"Loki -- you have seen him?" Thor frowns, more than a bit distressed. By the idea that Loki has been here, speaking with Jane, while he handled other matters -- including the matter of finding his brother's location.

And distressed by the ideathat Loki had been filling Jane's mind with enough cleverly told truths and partial truths that her opinion of him has changed. Grown layered, grown tangled.

"His tongue has been as busy as ever it had been, I see." Thor frowns, looking down, uncertain of how to answer this question. Of where to start his answer.

"On the surface of it, yes. Yes, that is what I wanted. Wanted badly. But it is -- a longer story than this, I hope. I have believed. But I will not lie to you, nor excuse that urge. Yes, I wanted them destroyed -- utterly beaten."

She wants to keep her mind open until she's heard the whole truth, but what he says is difficult to hear. She lets go of him completely and backs up a few steps. She shakes her head, her brow furrowed in confusion. Loki had said much, and she'd written it all off as lies. Now Thor was telling her it was truth all along?

"Why?" she asks softly as she blinks back the beginnings of tears. Fear is threatening to overtake her heart. Could this man not be who she thought he was?
