Getting PHP working properly on windows properly is not easy. You would be better installing something like Wamp as its already built and an nice all in one system (php, apache, mysql)

Other option is to get another box, physical or virtual and install something like centos on it.

Also try to stay away from php4, code to php5 standards as there are a lot of security related changes as well as some things that have been removed.

cheers for the suggestions; i've been wanting to implement some decent vpn connectivity as well, and i know the windows implementation is a bit crap, so i wanted to play with openvpn too. just in the process of trying to install and configure openSuse at the moment...

For server based stuff you are better off with either a RedHat distro (Centos or Fedora) or a Debian distro (Debian or at a push Ubuntu)
