So yeah, aparently my mother had a microchip put in the dog. I was shocked when she told me. A microchip! In the dog! It's a *dog*! Why would you put ANYTHING like that in a dog? She told me it's the size of a grain of rice and it's for identification purposes. You see, if our dog was ever to be lost and then found by someone and brought to ( Read more... )

I'll try to be nice here, but I was a mailman, and any piece of technology that could possibly be used in the future to keep a dog from ripping my ass apart could be considered a positive in my case (I don't like dogs). But I guess if my cat had a microchip installed in her I would be a little put off, the RoboPet thing I guess. I don't think it would lead to metallic barks/meows/whatever, and I'd be willing to bet that the pet is still as cuddly as ever.

At least they didn't do something so cruel as to like tattoo a UPC code on it somewere for scanning. That would be more Big Brother to me because its visual.

It's a scary thought, but it's possible that someday we're all gonna have chips in us humans. Will RoboDog really be such a big deal when you're RoboJenn?

There's an IQP in this.

At risk of sounding like a total bitch, how on earth could this technology be used to keep the dog from ripping your ass apart?

wow, that's crazy. Where IN the dog did they put it? I mean..how can you "scan" your dog if it's imbedded under the skin or something? Also, how does it hold a charge to keep functioning over time? I wouldn't ever want to put something like that in humans...reminds me too much of tattoos for ID in the nazi concentration camps, I think I would only allow it in criminals, if that. I know I wouldn't allow it in myself also, I'd have big problems the day that came to pass.

haha dude, relax . . . first of all it's one of those things that can run for quite some time . . long after the dog's life has expired (sad to think of that of course). also i don't like the idea of it being there either, but i don't think i will compare it to ID tattoos on concentration camp prisoners. and it's not a bar code . . . haha they don't run the dog under a laser scanner . . . at least i hope they don't . . . *calls mother*

hahaha no i was saying if it happened in humans it'd be like that. Plus i was a bit interested in the process for animals, since one day I guess I might be doing the inserting.

hey! my dog has one too, only we didnt do it by choice, it was there when we bought him. they have it because he is an expensive purebred so they could recognize him if someone stole him. he is a totally normal dog, i dont think it affected his personality at all. ;)

Just to throw this out there, there actually is a microchip for humans. At a beach resort club in Barcelona the VIP treatment is having a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) inserted into your upper arm. This way, you don't have to keep money or a credit card in your bikini. You put $$ in it before and a scanner (i'm assuming like a grocery scanner or something on a wall) will permit you access to VIP lounges or pay for drinks while you're sun bathing.

And you can have it removed or not when you leave.

So you could have it in you forevers! sound fun?

I've totally got one of those things so the mothership can keep an eye on my movements. On a completely unrelated note, just a piece of advice: wear lots of lead clothing tommorow.
