They had planned and prepared for this assault in advance. They had separate parts for most of the mission, but would both accomplish their ends of the objective, she was sure, unless an unidentified obstacle stepped in their way. And really, what were the chances of that happening? Aside from her recent encounter with California, she usually had ( Read more... )

Cal looked up at Mass, staring through his eye pieces at her. To be true, he was still a little nervous working with a woman he had fought and who had a change of heart to keep him alive. Any regular freelancer would've killed him in such a sad state. Cal made sure that, despite being partners, he'd keep his guard up. At least until the mission was finished.

"Yes, I'm ready." Cal responded, getting to his feet. Since the mission would most likely be a close-quarters battle, for him at least, Cal had packed a M6D magnum in his breast plate along with a single SMG with a couple spare rounds. Grabbing a pair of fragmentation grenades, he slipped them into the Tactical Hardcase attached to his side. A little boom-boom never hurt Cal before. "Let's go."

It was a boon that her Warthog hadn't been damaged during their last mission, because it would make it much easier to get where they were going. Lizzy stayed going just a bit above the speed limit. Going the speed limit was another reason for people to look at you suspiciously. If you went a bit above it, people tended to notice you less, and that included cops.

Twenty-nine minutes later, Lizzy tucked the car on the upper level of a nondescript-- and better yet, cameraless-- parking garage down the street from Fortin Firearms Inc. They had been silent on the drive over, and she only broke the silence now for last instructions before they parted ways.

"We have ten minutes. Don't be late," she warned him as she took her case from the back of the car.

California simply nodded in response. Deadlines never worked for him, but since this was their first mission together, it was good to give a nice first impression. Making his way down out of the parking garage, he quickly and silently, out of sight, made his way over to the wall that took up a spot where there were, apparently, some apartments before.

Sliding down and going prone by the wall, California unhooked his SMG and reached into his tactical hardcase, grabbing a single grenade. Waiting for the signal, California absentmindedly rubbed his thumb against his helmets eyepieces.

Cal darted up the wall, dropping silently down the other side. Creeping up to the corner that ended the wall and started the guard station with it's gate, Cal grabbed the first of two guards assigned to the post and jammed his knife deep into the guards throat, covering his mouth while dragging him back. Cal dumped the body behind a garbage container.

Drawing his magnum, Cal entered the guards booth, pressed the barrel against the back of the remaining guards head and pulled the trigger. Stuffing the body beneath the console, Cal did his best to remove the blood. A trap is a trap, and if there's one little bit of evidence to prove the paranoia of the target, the missions a bust.

"Mass, Cal here. Front gate is secure, awaiting target."

"To you in 15 seconds," she replied quietly, tracking the car as it exited the round and turned into the driveway. It slowed as it approached the guard booth, in preparation for showing the usual quick ID flash, and Lizzy held very still. If all went well, her part in this would be minimal.

They have reached the gate. Sil was keeping sharp tabs on the mission and also on their surroundings. Where Lizzy was blinded by the narrow focus of her sniper scope, Sil could still monitor movement near them and warn Lizzy of anyone approaching them unexpectedly. Area is still clear.

So far, so good.

Cal quickly checked his clip over, counting seven out of eight bullets remaining. Should be enough Cal thought, slapping it back into the gun. Don't get too overconfident Josh. Last time you did that it resulted in your scar. Omicron voiced. Cal simply nodded solemnly before hearing the car pull up.

Taking in a deep breath, he pulled the magnum hammer back and spun out into the window of the booth, raising the magnum. But the driver had already beaten him to the punch, pistol out and pointing right at him.

A gunshot rang out.

Cal leaped out of the booth as another window rolled down and an SMG tore the booth apart. Guards stepped out of the limo and and pursued, joined by other various guards who seemed to sprout out like rabbits ( ... )

Lizzy's grip tightened on her rifle as Cal was swarmed. She had been expecting some resistance, but they had known he was already there. If the shooting hadn't confirmed that, the slew of guards that went up against him did. Of course, he was a freelancer. Lizzy kept her eye to the scope of her gun, waiting to see if their plan would still pan out without being too much of a risk to Cal. He held his own for a while, but, as they had planned, he was captured-- and beaten, that hadn't been in their calculations-- by Fortin's guards. Lizzy shook her head slightly in sympathy as they knocked his helmet off, then her eyes were glued to it as they dragged Cal away.

The capturing, not such a big problem. The helmet? That was a huge problem.

Sil, Lizzy thought, already breaking down the rifle.

Omicron has been left behind. The guards seem to have no interest in the helmet. You have a short window in which to retrieve her.

Cal's head turned to the right, grunting as a fist forced it that way. "I'll say again, tell us who sent you!" Dumb guards. "If I told you, I guess I'd have to kill myself afterward." Cal replied, receiving another punch. Did they really think physical punishment would get information out of Cal? Then they've obviously never heard of the freelancers ( ... )

The guard pressing the pistol to the back of Cal's head suddenly gurgled as a deep gash appeared in his throat, spurting blood onto the back of Cal's head and armor. Unceremoniously, his body was tossed away, the gun firing off a single random shot that was safely aimed away from Cal ( ... )

The moment the blood splattered against him, he knew it was Lizzy. The red liquid was easy to ignore, and he remained on his knees until he heard another thud.

Cal paused before jerking his wrists outwards, snapping the chains around his wrists with ease. With a swift motion, his right hand clamped tightly around the helmet and slipped it back on, immediately rebooting the HUD and establishing a connection with his AI.

Miss me Josh? Omi asked, the image of a woman with her arms crossed flashed across his mind.

If we weren't in the middle of getting in a fight, yes.Josh quickly slid away from the bodies snatching up one of the pistols and checking the clip. The guards were too busy looking for Massachusetts. Fools. In the next moments, Cal easily watched as they collapsed to the ground ( ... )

Lizzy watched Cal shatter the glass, then turned and looked back at the door the guards would shortly be coming through. She had no qualms about going out of the window-- she'd certainly done enough of that in her time-- but it was going to be a narrow escape if she'd ever had one. She was equal parts tense and thrilled.

Better brace yourself! Sil suggested cheerfully. Lizzy looked back to Cal, her visor blocking her expression as she quickly crossed over to him.

"Ladies first." The grin she was wearing was implied in her tone of voice and without further preamble she vaulted out of the window, turning her body to face the building as she traveled out into open air.

Straight drop, likelihood of fractures high, fair possibility of broken bones, Sil offered, but she sounded giddy. It's going to be a long drop! With an eye sharpened by her visor, Lizzy calculated the fall to the next faint window ledge and made a grab for it. Her shoulder wrenched, causing her to grit her teeth, but it stopped her momentum so that she at least wouldn't ( ... )
