Catching Up

Lizzy sat leaning forward in a simple wooden chair, her long braid draped down the front of her armor. She'd left the helmet on the table once she was sure it was going to be a while before California came to himself, but she had left his helmet on so that Sigma could continue to monitor his human companion. One mission had turned her life ( Read more... )

Lizzy took to pouring the water through the coffee grinds and glanced over as Cal moved off. As he placed his helmet on, she glanced at her own, but left it on the table for now. She was in her own home, and Cal was-- for the moment-- not a threat. Although he was beginning to sound more like the man she had first encountered, and coupled with his fully armored visage was a bit unsettling in her helmet-less state ( ... )

"I'm dead to them anyways." he explained, refraining the annoyance threatening to enter his voice. "I overheard one of the higher ups that they expected me to die in the mission, and if I did, they'd back stab me when I got back. Sigma's a different issue. One that I do not wish to discuss."

Lightly grasping the cup, he took it from her hands and held it close, breathing in it's scent. It had been a long time since he's had good coffee. "Partners aren't problems with me, even if I did...well...appear a bit "come-near-me-you-die" in the beginning. Didn't stop Wash or York though." he said, mind wondering back to the old days, slowly bringing his hand up, stopping at the last minute as he forgot about his helmet.

"Still," he continued, taking the helmet off,"Doesn't mean I'm against partnership. So, what's your decision. Deal? Or no deal?" He held his hand out, waiting.

Lizzy's face smoothed out into a clean mask at the mention of his friends. Her mind flashed two images at her almost simultaneously, one a memory of a brunette man glancing up at her from where he was hunched over a computer console and another memory of a freelancer in brown-and-white armor looking at her as they walked down one of the long hallways at the base.

York...She didn't dwell on it for longer than a moment before she refocused on the present. She had no idea what had happened to York or Delta, and it was probably better it stayed that way. But California she couldn't un-meet, as it were, and she knew he was capable from her own encounter even if his reputation as a freelancer hadn't preceded him ( ... )

Cal let a grin slip onto his face as he sat down across from his new partner, slipping his helmet off and setting it next to her's before putting his mug to his lips and taking a small drink.

He felt a little uncomfortable though, as if he was intruding on Mass' life, though it could be similar to all the other freelancer's still on the run.

"So, what's the next order of business Ma'am?" he said, trying to sound a bit of a subordinate to Massachusetts.

"Well, first you can stop callin' me ma'am. I haven't been a superior to anyone since... well, since I got picked for the Freelancer Program. If we're going to work together, then we're going to do it as equals." She adopted a thoughtful look and squinted slightly at him for a moment before she leaned forward and relaxed her expression. "Did you have any experience in the military before the freelancers, Cal ( ... )

"Well," he began hesitantly, "not exactly. I was brought into the program off the streets." he informed, taking another sip of his coffee.

California's face went blank at the mention of Wyoming. The stuck up English-man always put him down when he did something good in the program. "Nope, can't imagine that he would at all. To arrogant....asshole." he muttered under his breath, cursing the white armored man out from under his breath.

"Good. So you can just call me Mass, or Lizzy's fine. I think it was pretty much a toss-up while I was in the program." She added a great deal of milk to her coffee and went to put it back in the fridge. "I'm sure you have some small file started on me anyway. Most of us did, I think."

Armed with a spoon she had scooped from the drawer on her way back, Lizzy settled carefully back into her chair and began stirring. Her good mood seemed to be going strong, and as Cal would probably learn, tended to stay that way. "Favorite food? Hobbies?" Work-related questions could wait until they began searching for jobs. Lizzy blew on her coffee and took a hesitant sip. Although she needed to let it cool, she continued to cradle the mug in her hands. It wasn't as if she could feel it through the gloves anyway.

"Well, I prefer ham, cheese and lettuce sandwiches. And I don't really have any hobbies besides customizing weapons I can get my hands on." California informed, blowing on his coffee again before taking another sip.

"Call me Cal or Josh. I want to save people the responsibility of spelling out my entire name. So what about you? What can you tell me about yourself?" Cal inquired, leaning back in his chair and tapping his fingers against the table. He wanted...needed to know more about the person he was going to be working with from now on.

Lizzy raised her eyebrow. "Well, I like the color blue, my best friend is my AI, and I have seriously considered cutting this off many times and just going back to the short hairstyle I had in the program." She lifted the long braid for emphasis and let it fall as she took another drink of her coffee. "Not sure I have a favorite food. I love my rifle, and outside of work 'hobbies' like practicing my hand-to-hand in bar fights, I think I like reading the most. You'd be surprised how much free time there is between jobs when you aren't at the beck-and-call of higher-ups. A disconcerting amount of time.

"Obviously, I don't use my state name when putting myself on the market, and you may want to consider an alias, or a return to your old name as well. Helps with keeping them from tracking you." She shook her head. "Not that I'm sure they don't keep tabs on me, of course. 'Sky' isn't too far off from my name. If they really looked, they'd find me ( ... )

"Thanks for the advice on the name change and alias stuff Mass." he said, drinking down the last of his coffee. Getting up, he set it in the sink before rinsing it out and placing it on the counter.
