Heart beat, a heart beat, I need a heart beat, a heart -tell me would you kill to save a life?

Kate doesn't dream. Doesn't ponder, doesn't drift, doesn't wander, the silence and the blackness in her head is absolute and enveloping. It's curled around her like a child's play cape, dark silk, thick enough with regret and memory to smother ( Read more... )

Morgana had been at Kate's bedside since early that morning. The smart idea, she'd said. Someone to keep an eye on Kate and she herself got to do nothing but rest which was something she still desperately needed, her body still suffering from the after affects of her dream.

Although what she didn't really need was time to sit and think. She'd brought her reading down with her as a distraction, still trying to trace Morgause's family tree. It kept her occupied and she felt that she owed it to the sorceress even more now after all she'd done for her following her dream.

She was still highly alert though, rising to her feet as soon as Kate stirred. As the other woman coughed, she reached for the water bottle, pressing the straw lightly between Kate's dry lips.

"Drink," she insisted quietly. "You need it."

Kate obeyed without a thought, the cool water washing the blood and grit out of her throat. She didn't know it yet, but she'd been on an IV for several hours, so her dehydration was minimal, and after a few seconds, she flopped back onto the pillow and slowly remembered.

It all seemed like a dream, the worst one, but then again nothing felt quite real right now. She'd been...there, and now she was here, and all of it was real. There'd be time later to ponder how one event led into another. Slowly, she managed to focus her vision, and flicked her gaze over to the figure sitting beside her.

Morgana held the bottle until she pulled back and then put in on the side, waiting for Kate to let her know what else she needed. When he gaze finally looked across at her she could only bear the silence for a moment.

"You're back at the Sanctuary," she explained quietly. "Morgause and Micah healed you."

Yes...that sounded right, but she's not ready to think about why she needed healing, not ready to remember. Not remember fighting to urge to vomit when she saw the white glint of her hipbone through skin and muscle eaten away by chemicals, not remember...no, not yet.

Kate shook off the thoughts, pushing herself slightly more upright with a wince, muscles cramping from inactivity on top of everything else. Her hands from the wrist down were almost comically padded in enough loose cotton and gauze, looking like white boxer's gloves. It would occur to her later that this was as much to keep her from seeing the smashed crooked mess of her fingers as it was to immobilize them.

"Could have fooled me", she coughed dryly, instinct still finding a reason to crack a weak joke. She was referring, of course, to the continual pain, not comparing the infirmary to Cabal facilities.

Nigel shuffled quietly into Kate's room. He had seen Morgana leave earlier and he wanted to check on Kate for himself.

She looked asleep and he didn't want to wake her. He moved to sit tirely in the chair beside her bed. He wrapped his robe tightly around himself. Mogause has brought him some of his own clothes and he felt more comfortable dispite feeling ill.

He sat staring at her, trying desperatly not to think of how she looked when they had found her.

Kate was trying to sleep, to little avail. Her body seemed sure that it had rested enough, and no matter how long she rested her eyes and tried to clear her thoughts, it didn't seem to matter. She heard the dull shuffle of footsteps growing nearer, and rolled back on her back to see who it was. Her shoulder was starting to throb from laying on it anyway.

Nigel, yes, she remembered his voice, back there? Couldn't be sure. She opened her eyes the rest of the way,

"You look like shit." She murmured softly.

"Hello Kate," Nigel said warmly, if tiredly. "You're looked better," he statted. "How are ou feeling?" he asked ignoring her observation about how he looked.

She felt like she'd been run over by a bus, twice, but it was nothing compared to what the last few weeks had been like. She had a feeling he understood that very well. Kate shrugged, a very small movement, "I'm alright."

It was early evening before Nikola came to see Kate. Morgana had not been in particularly high spirits when she had returned so Nikola could only assume that things had not gone well between the two of them.

That is why he hovered at the door, still arguing with himself over whether or not this was a good idea.

Kate had spent most of the day drifting in and out of something resembling sleep. She never quite drifted off properly, but let her eyes close periodicaly, just listening to the dull beep of moniters. After a time, she heard the almost inaudible sound of footsteps and opened her eyes, seeing none other than Nikola Tesla standing at the edge of her bed.

Nikola did not say anything, merely stared at her. He was horrified at what the Cabal had done to her - having seen the results on Morgana - the blood quite literally on his hands. He should never have abandoned her to her fate and yet, he was still upset with her over everything that had happened. What could he posibly say to her?

Kate made an effort to sit up, pushing herself up on her elbows, fingers and hands still to heavily bandaged to put any weight on. She looked at him across the small space, unsure of what to say, wondering if she should speak first.

Helen sits in the nearly silent infirmary, going over reports and documents detailing what has gone on while she's been away. Kate had woken a few times during the day, but never when Helen's been in to check on her.

Nikola's told her the basics of what happened, but Helen has yet to speak with the younger woman for any length of time.

Kate leaned back on the pillows, shifting uncomfortably. She knew she needed rest to recover her strength but her muscles didn't know that. They were complaining from spending so many hours in bed.

She stretched carefully, wincing as the newly knit together flesh throughout her chest and back from the bullet twinged.

Helen sets the computer down and makes her way over. "Hello, there."

Kate looked up at the voice. Now there was a face she hadn't practically seen since she'd first arrived.

"Dr. Magnus", she replied, wondering if the lady of the house knew all that had transpired in Kate's stay here. "...Hey?"
