I actually scored this (refurbished) Micron for $300 (that's down from $400 normally), and it has the same synth engine as it's older brother the Ion, as well as a vocoder and an onboard sequencer (the latter of which the Ion doesn't even have)! And for a digital synth, this is about as close to true analog sound as it gets, so if you want them phat as hell Boards Of Canada bass lines or warm old-school ambient tones this is not a bad instrument for that sort of thing. So a Micron would probably not be a bad place to start, though you can of course audition mine sometime if you're interested.

Other options might include a Korg microKorg ($400), a Novation XioSynth (25-key version: $300), or a Korg Electribe EMX1 (synth groovebox - $500) or ESX1 (sampling groovebox - $500).
