But I don't want to be a bitch

Sep 22, 2002 15:56

Something happened the other day that made me realize that this city is starting to wear off on me. And I don't like that. This woman was walking in the opposite direction of me in the street. She had a baby strapped to her chest, a book bag thing on her back and bags in her hands. When we were about to cross paths, her baby dropped a blankie ( Read more... )

But on the other hand... anonymous September 22 2002, 18:38:28 UTC
Sounds to me like maybe New Yorkers just have a better grip on the harshness of real life than us quasi-nieve Midwesterners. They don't "waste" time on "useless" gestures of politeness, I guess I'm trying to say.

So...you're not becoming a bitch. Just getting more real-worldy...?

a: kelly, you're a lovey for being so horrified... i think that's a sure sign that we're not, in fact, losing you to the world of thom's so-called realists. *snuggles*

b: thomson, that is one of the more ridiculous things i have ever heard. when the fuck did gestures of politeness become useless?? i wish you could see me spluttering with rage right now. i'd either punch you in the face or give you a laugh, because, _seriously_... USELESS?? if politeness was useless, everyone would treat you like i do. end of story.

c: "nieve" is spanish for "it's snowing." i believe you were going for "naive." *pedantic snicker*

I thank you for your insights Thom, I really do. But here goes: I never thought I was naive just because I lived in the midwest. I always knew New York was a harsh place, but that doesn't mean that I can't be disturbed by it. If everyone just accepted the way things were, would anything ever get done? I know I can't change the entire attitude of a city, but I can be as smiley and polite as ever because that's who I am. I think if anything, this city needs more people like me. People who care. Compassion. I refuse to be sucked into this "real world" if that's what you call it. It is "real" here, but I will never think that common courtesy anbd basic humanity are an outdated or somehow unnecessary thing in this world I don't think kindness is a WASTE of time. It's something that you should MAKE time for in you life. Being an insolent bastard or a prissy bitch does not make a person "worldly". It just makes them mean. I hope I'm not coming off really mean here. I'm just trying to explain myself.

just everyone refer to my lj entry on mean people. they suck. if you can't be polite, then just go fuck yourself, cuz i'm tired of people who are mean because they think they're better than i am. i agree with lexa and kelly.

No, Kelly, you don't come off as mean in your response - I appreciated it, really. Apparently not everyone is like that, however...

I was just trying to find a way, some way, to see any positive in your...behavior. So, you know, I was just guessing up something. You all don't have to take it so seriously.

I know what you meant with your first comment, Thom. I was just responding to it. But I also believe that there's a little truth in almost everything a person says. Even if they were just guessing it up. Just something to think about.

By the way, I really do appreciate your comments. I'm not trying to necessarily refute everything you say. I'm just responding to it with my opinion.
