Feud: Bette And Joan

Jan 18, 2018 19:42

Just finished watching Feud: Bette and Joan, and really enjoyed it. It had all the fun campy moments and one liners that you’d expect (‘Fuck off, Sylvia!’), but it was also a really poignant and timely look at how Hollywood treats women, and what it’s like to grow old in that business. It seems like most people are Team Bette, but tbh I emphasised ( Read more... )

I grew up on all those old films - my parents love them - but I haven't gotten to seeing Feud yet. I hear Olivia de Havilland is suing the creators over how they portrayed her.

It was really good, I definitely think that you would enjoy it if you’re into Old Hollywood, you can tell that they went to a lot of trouble to portray the old sets and movies as accurately as possible, and really get across the feel of that time

And I can understand that actually, the one segment that seemed a little unnecessary to me was other actors (played by Kathy Bates and Catherine Zeta Jones) supposedly being interviewed years later to share their thoughts on the feud. That just seemed like a way to get some exposition across, and it was an odd choice considering that those interviews never happened in reality, but the miniseries could lead you to believe that they were real quotes as it was mostly trying to stay accurate with everything else

Perhaps that's why then. I think she felt misrepresented.

I was considering watching this show but in the end I didn't have the time when it aired... so maybe at some point I will still get to watch :) Glad you enjoyed it!

I’ve been considering watching it for a while as well, I only just got around to it when it was recently added to BBC iPlayer, and I was pleasantly surprised at just how good it was

I've heard of Big Little Lies, but haven't seen it. What's it about?

Hmm it’s kind of hard to explain, it’s based on a book that’s actually a thriller, but the tv series is much more focused on looking at the life’s of all the women and how they relate to one another. It’s hard to do justice too in a summary, but it’s very good, the director did an amazing job with it

I've always been a big fan of old movies, and I remember being freaked out as a child watching both "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" and "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte." O_O

I watched Feud last year when it originally aired and enjoyed it very much. I LOVED the animated opening credit sequence, with its jazzy music and the minimalist silhouettes. You don't see lengthy intros like that to shows anymore, and it's sort of become a lost art.

I also loved the character of Mamacita. The actress played that role perfectly and IMO stole every scene she was in from Jessica Lange (which is pretty hard to do!).

It seems like most people are Team Bette,

That was my impression too, and I think a lot of it goes back to the whole "Mommie Dearest" persona that Joan Crawford was stuck with (rightly or wrongly) after her daughter's book came out (and the subsequent movie). I kept expecting there to be a scene in Feud where Crawford explains her hatred of wire hangers. ;D
