The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

I just finished watching the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel recently on Amazon. I’m not sure how many on my flist are watching this one though (you really should be!), at the moment it very much feels like a show that the critics adore, but the general public never watch :( In spite of all the awards attention, it’s not even Amazon’s ( Read more... )

I've stayed away because shows about stand-up comedy usually make me cringe - Lenny Bruce as love interest is an interesting take though!

Oh I’m always ready to cringe as well! I’ve seen a few viewers complain that Midge is too successful and they should show her bombing on stage more often to keep things realistic, but I was cringing way too much when she bombed at a comedy club in season 1, and so I’m always kind of half tense at the beginning of her routines now in case it happens again lol. I got super embarrassed for her in season 2 as well when she gets carried away with her comedy routine at her friends wedding, but other than those two moments they do show her as being very talented thankfully and knowing how to work an audience ( ... )

This show has gotten a lot of praise here in Norway, but I haven't seen in. I don't have amazon, sadly.

It seems to be getting praise from most critics, but not many people are watching at all sadly

I have season 2 downloaded on my tablet to probably watch on holiday. I absolutely loved season 1!

I was really impressed with it, I enjoyed the first season, but with season 2 I got even more into it! You can tell that they have a bigger budget to work with I think, they have more location shooting, and they’ve obviously spending a lot of time on the direction and the tracking shots, it would be the perfect show to watch on holiday :)

I've thought about watching it since it is one of the few Prime shows I have actually heard about outside of Amazon's own ads...like, who watches Bosch? What is it even about? Why does it have four seasons???
Anyway, I always felt like it's not my kind of show. Then again, I watched all episodes of Gilmore Girls even though I thought exactly the same thing at first.

I know what you mean, it feels like Amazon have really struggled with marketing their shows compared to Netflix. Even when I haven’t seen a show like Stranger Things or Thirteen Reasons Why, I am at least aware of them because they become pop culture phenomenons with a lot of people talking about them, whereas Amazon seems to have tons of random shows like Bosch, Sneaky Pete, some 80’s tennis show (?) that you come across when you’re browsing their platform that hardly anyone cares about. Lol even with The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel, you could kind of tell that the Emmy audience were a bit baffled at this streaming show that they had never heard of winning so many of the top awards. The Man In The High Castle is the one show I can think of that got a lot of hype for Amazon, but otherwise none of their originals seem to really catch on

And it’s a different kind of show, but it does have similar vibes to GG. The pilot is really strong, so I would suggest just watching that to see if it interests you or not

I feel exactly the same! I also haven't seen Stranger Things or 13 Reasons Why and know at least a little bit about them.

some 80’s tennis show
What? I had no idea that existed lol
They also have a German show called Beat which is about a club in Berlin? Their first German show, You Are Wanted, was actually marketed a lot here and had some rather famous actors. The first season was pretty bad and it was canceled after S2 which I never even bothered watching.

To be honest, I started hearing about the show after the Emmys. I was just as surprised I guess.

I probably will! So far I liked Rachel Brosnahan whenever she appearded in a show I watched.

I haven’t seen her in anything else actually, but she is sooo good in this :)

What? I had no idea that existed lol

Haha yes, and there’s another show based around the symphony and what goes on there behind the scenes. They could be really good shows for all I know, but these Amazon originals do seem like kind of random premises a lot of the time, even though I would assume they’re really aiming for the kind of mainstream appeal that Netflix shows get?
