Just finished season 1 of True Detective and I absolutely loved it

The cinematography and direction were just incredible, it was fascinating seeing a part of America that doesn’t normally get shown on tv, and of course the writing and acting was terrific as well. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey played off one another perfectly as a couple of totally mismatched detectives who manage to form a partnership. I ( Read more... )

The second series of True Detective was awful. I really tried because I liked the cast, but it was so slow and boring that I gave up 2 eps in. Series 3 that just aired was very enjoyable though; while it wasn't as good as series 1, it did have some good acting and a strong storyline, so I'd recommend giving it a go.

I have heard that season 3 is an improvement on season 2, but then everyone seemed so down on season 2 that that wouldn’t be hard I guess *g* From what I read the creator originally envisioned the first season as a novel and spend a ton of years working on it, so it does seem like a bit of a cash grab to then go on to make it an anthology series even when it doesn’t sound like he originally had more than one story he wanted to tell?

I've had no inkling about watching True Detective, I only had brief interest in watching S2 for Colin Farrell, but mostly now I just want to watch a compilation of only his scenes or something. idk

It hasn’t really been a show that I’ve been desperate to watch or anything as I don’t usually get that into detective shows, so I’m pretty late to it, but I saw it on NowTv and thought I may as well give it a go after all the hype the first season got. I would definitely saw that all of the praise there was well deserved, right from the beginning it’s a show that really draws you in

It was a larger conspiracy. Childress was just sort of a rogue going nuts.

S2 isn't really all that bad. It did have some flaws in that it was much bigger than in needed to be and wondered in places. I think if they had edited out certain storylines, made it a bit tighter, it might have been better received. You really need to pay attention, though.

I thought that was meant to be the case, but it was a bit little bit confusing to me when the final episode just focused on him and his sister out in the middle of nowhere. I definitely need to rewatch it I think!

And honestly I’m not super into this genre usually which is another part of the reason that I’m not that anxious to watch the other seasons. I checked season 1 out because of all the praise it received, and it was one of the rare shows that pulled me in instantly and I immediately loved the characters (well in spite of getting iffy on Marty later on that is lol), so I’m not sure if I would be as drawn in by seasons with different characters or not. A big part of what I liked about the first season were the characters of Marty and Rust and how they bounced off one another

Yeah, the marsh cult thing went back all the way before the antagonist was born. There is a line in the finale about not getting them all.

If it's not your genre, yeah, S2 probably won't be your thing.

Oh, my, all the typos in my last post.

I think you'd be right to leave it at season 1. I didn't watch past two episodes of S2 - just didn't grab me at all. Thing is Matthew McConaughy is such a powerhouse actor in that I don't think True Detective would have made the impact it did without him. I found it hard to like the Marty character to...I just found him sleezy to be honest but I enjoyed his and Rust's relationship.

I absolutely loved Big Little Lies. I wish I could erase my memory and watch it all over again. Being a mum I've unfortunately had a run in with a Renata. I'm definately a Jane.

That’s kind of where I’m at, I just don’t think a regular detective show would grab me without Rust’s character to bring something unique to it. I did love Marty when he was around Rust as well though, some of their conversations in the car especially were so hilarious with Marty’s down to earth frustrated responses to Rust’s grand philosophising. It was mostly around women where he just started to become too much of a sleaze to me after a while, I think it was episode 6 where I hit my breaking point with his character, but then I softened to him again after he and Rust reunited in the future timeline

I loved the first series and hated the second; it was so completely pointless. Haven't seen the third yet, though I downloaded the first few episodes to watch later.

I hardly ever recommend fanfic unsolicited, but What We've Got is one of the best fanfics I've read in any fandom ever, and is a better idea than watching the second series.

Thanks for the rec! Honestly I’ve already been browsing Archive Of Our Own for Rust/Marty fix-it and h/c fic, I’m so predictable *g* I did have a browse on YouTube for bromance videos as well and couldn’t find much sadly, but there does seem to be plenty of fic at least

And it feels a bit pointless to me anyway to go on if the characters are all going to be different, I’d give it a shot otherwise, but at the moment I think I’m going to just leave it as a one-off miniseries that I really enjoyed
