"Na~ah, Squalo, aren't you a little worried?"
"Wanna pick a fight, punk? Varia's going to win, why the fuck should I be worried about?"
"Maa, maa, not talking about the upcoming battle, Squaaalo. But about a certain little friend of yours..."

Squalo raised an eyebrow, perfectly knowing who was the other referring to, but he didn't answer. He would die before letting the damn prince and his annoying singing voice think he knew his weak point. A cruel smile appeared on Belphegor's face and a chuckle escaped his lips. He was really making fun of him, damn it.

"Spit up your venom, bastard, or go away. I'm already losing patience."

Bel couldn't help but laugh. He turned his back on Squalo, still singing, and opened the door. The swordsman thought he would just go and leave him alone, but the prince threw his poisonous weapon to kill Squalo's relief.

"Do you really think Dino will survive this battle? His family was on the edge when we last heard of them... A pity, really, you had so many things to tell him..."

The door closed on his last words, before Squalo could tell him to shut up, before he could maybe hit him, before he could lie pretending he didn't care about the Cavallone's fate. No way. No way had he cared about it. Dino? Just an annoying and useless brat. If the Cavallone lost, that would mean more place for Varia. You can't count on Dino anyway... That useless guy was...

"Always here for me..." whispered Squalo.

He frowned, surprised by his own words. So what? He had to care about Dino because Dino saved his life? He didn't ask for anything! He should have died rather than living with the memory of the humiliation. Humiliated by the defeat against a kid, and now humiliated because he had to be saved.

"Fuck. Fucking brat."

He closed his eyes and leant his head on the sofa. With a groan of frustration, he brutally got up, barely aware of the pillows falling and his glass breaking on the floor. All he could see behind his closed eyelids was Dino, Dino, and Dino again. Dino swimming in a see of blood. Maybe he'll never see him again...

He hit the wall as the realization hit him: he wanted to see the brat again. He wanted to scream at him and insult him. He wanted to throw away Dino's good feelings again, just to see the disappointment in his eyes. Dino was always making fun of him, thinking he needed him, deliberately ignoring him when he talked. He was plain dumb, and Squalo hated him for that. Dino told him one day that he could be his back-up if he wanted. The place to call home, if he needed to. Squalo hated him for that too, because Dino's words just made the fact concrete. Dino Cavallone had always been his back-up, since their childhood. He was the one absorbing Squalo's bad mood, anger, frustration. Because he never said anything, he was the one cooling him down. He was the hand on his shoulder, the back on his back, the annoying smile brightening his days... Squalo never really thanked him, for anything, in the twenty-five years they knew each other. Not that Dino was waiting for it, and not that Squalo would really thank him. But Dino knew, and Squalo knew he knew. They were friends. They just never took the same path.

Hiding with his family only, while he could have joined the other hideouts, that was Dino Cavallone. After the battle, Squalo will have to tell him two or three things about fights and war. Did he really think Dino would survive this battle? Squalo laughed.

"The fucking horse will take the enemy down by himself. As always."
