I liked season 3 but the fourth season of Big Love turned out to be a disaster. Poorly written plots, silly storylines or storylines that never went anywhere... ( Read more... )
Yes, wildly uneven show, but hugely entertaining, with some wonderful performances scattered through it. And very good in a meta way about the American obsession with Growth. To question that growth might be unnecessary, that it might be better for things (like GDP, say, or acreage planted, or number of stores, or whatever business-related thing) should stay steady or heaven forbid, decline, because other things are more important or expansion will kill the planet and us all, is a true blasphemy in a lot of the USA.
I love how Bill is turning his suburb into Juniper Creek without even trying! The "Margene was 16 when he married her" revelation was priceless, and that ridiculous living nativity at the end, with Bill playing Joseph opposite to a Virgin Cara-Lynn (who is close to 16 now), and the cars driving around with people taking pictures. That family has become a freak show!
And I loved how Adaleen, the cunning survivor, played the nativity game, re-purifying herself before becoming again a mother to baby Alby.
Season 5 already seems better than the previous one, and episode 2 gave me a scene I've been waiting for ages: Nicki and Barb dancing together.
