I’ve always hated how all the schools I’ve ever attended are so close together you feel as though you’ve never truly even stepped one toe outside of the safety net of home. It seems as though the school system purposefully intended to chain every individual to the tiny barriers of each “safe” homey community ( Read more... )

if people had to drive thirty minutes to go to school just to get a look at their hometown, then they would just transfer to another school that is closer to them. thats how i see it.

well no, and i agree that going to a school thirty minutes away probably isn't the best solution. But schools could try to branch out a bit and offer trips to places other than local historical marks.

Parents don't want kids to see other parts of town that are "bad". i bet all westwood parents would protest a tour of the eastside. the thing with seeing different elements is that the people within the environment have to be willing to do that; the fact is most aren't. most people like safety nets and comfort, they don't want to think for themselves or learn about other new things. when you think about kids, most simply want to slide by in school doing as little work as possible, putting in the minimum amount of effort. the fact that most think that way leads to a closed-in environment and an unsubstantial appreciation for all that is out there. i remember when my dad and i would go on vacations they always had some educational purpose. i enjoyed learning about new cultures and seeing new places, no doubt i didn't find everything fascinating, but the fact that i experienced it made an impact on me. the point is very few kids in this world(or at least the usa) care about issues, people, and cultures outside their own because society ( ... )

yes! and its ridiculous! but half the reason the kids don't care is because they're not even given a chance TO care. granted, plenty wouldn't even if they were, but the fact remains that the lack of outer surroundings is bound to lead to problems the second a student walks out of their home door for college. it's funny, because look at private schools. private schools are the smallest, most sheltered, closed in communities within the entire school system altogether. yet they fund for these amazing trips to places FAR from their centers. ironic, isn't it?
