Taemin likes Jinki but Jinki likes Kibum. It's highschool. Of course Taemin is going to go through a typical heartbreak.
Jinki's in love. And it's not that silly 'I love you for two hours and then I’m over you' kind of high school love. When he sees him in the hallway his heart doesn't just flip. No. His heart jumps on trampolines, over vaults, back handsprings, floor routines all over his gymnasium of a ribcage. So when he struts towards Jinki while the senior is getting his books for his next class and curls a pretty hand around his upper arm, Jinki thinks his heart has started training for the Olympics. He is just so gorgeous, with his expressive chocolate eyes that sometimes meet Jinki's covered by his pure black side-swept fringe, with his thin pink lips that pull into the cutest pout when he's upset, with his everything. Jinki knows he's in love with a boy named Kim Kibum.
Taemin's in love too. He's in love yet his heart doesn't flip because it is a machine. It speeds up when he needs to express more love, more attention, more concern towards him. It runs at full power each and every day with no rest and no complete shutdowns, although there are times when his heart stutters, slowing down the production of love and a tight feeling grips his chest. It’s always when he watches him, black framed glasses slipping down his nose cutely, stumble over his words talking to that traitor of a friend. Taemin knows he's in love and will do anything for one Lee Jinki. Even if it means letting his senior fawn all over Kibum. It's all just a phase.
Except, it isn't. Because one day Jinki runs up to him in the cafeteria with a smile that powers the sun while Taemin's peeling an orange, and he envelops the boy in a tight hug, cutting off his means of air. Taemin struggles in his hold, flailing his arms and whining and yelling and making a scene but he really doesn't mind. Jinki lets go with a pout and crosses his arms as he takes a seat next to the first year boy.
“You won’t believe what just happened to me, Taeminnie!” He says, all excited and glowing in a way Taemin’s never seen before. And Jinki’s right, he doesn’t believe it. Doesn’t believe how quickly the little factory in his chest shuts down, all workers laid off, lights turned off, abandoned and desolate, when Jinki tells him oh so happily that Kibum finally asked him out.
