you are not special

I have had a lot of cool debates and discussions recently. A lot of deep thinking has been involved, which is very good. I haven't had mentally stimulating discussions like that in quite a while, so I have been able to exercize my philosophical mind, as well as my ability to find Bible passages relating to specific ideas ( Read more... )

I see what you're saying, but... deebofied April 7 2004, 12:52:37 UTC
there are cases when people become a very integral part of history of the lives of others, and it's usually not the ones that you expect or who pride themselves on being important. Indeed, it is the case that when I look at my own life, I'm not sure how influential I have been from the big picture point of view, but I know a handful of people who have been very big influences or integral parts to my life at various points, even if I don't talk to them that often anymore ( ... )

This doesn't really affect your larger argument, but I'm going to pull apart what you said anyway.

Yes, people are proud and think too highly of themselves.
Yes, people are selfish.
No, people aren't all that special.
But we are all unique, and I'm pretty sure that will remain. And we are significant, otherwise the shepherd in the parable wouldn't leave the 99 sheep behind to go look for the one. A parent with several children realizes that each child is different, and God is smart enough to know all his children as well as we can be known. God didn't save you because it adds one more number to the multitude of people who will praise him in Heaven, he saved you because he loves you like a father loves his child, and that's a very individualized, personal relationship.

Good wisdom. It indeed does not address my larger point, but is a good and truthful counterbalance nonetheless. For the most part my post was more of a stream-of-consciousness type of deal, referring to some recent frustrations. I was not attempting to create an entirely coherant argument. The main problem that I'm addressing is indeed pride. If i gave the impression that none of us are particularly unique, then I apologize. The main emphasis was on the source & standard for our uniqueness, just in case I did not make that clear. Of course, God is the answer for both, and thankfully so, or else life would be endlessly confusing. Anyways, time to study for Hebrew, thank you all for your responses.
