Another American takeover?
Soccer-Arsenal linked with American billionaire - paper
LONDON, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Arsenal are in talks with an
American billionaire and could become the latest English Premier
League club to forge ties across the Atlantic - according to a
report in The Independent newspaper on Friday.
Arsenal said they had no immediate comment to make on the
story.
The Independent said that American billionaire Stan Kroenke,
a property magnate, is having talks with Arsenal about forming a
groundbreaking partnership with his Major League Soccer (MLS)
club, Colorado Rapids.
The report of the proposed deal comes just days after the
takeover of Liverpool by American tycoons George Gillet and Tom
Hicks, and represents an increasing trend of American
businessmen buying into English soccer.
Manchester United and Aston Villa are also owned by American
business tycoons but there is no suggestion at this stage that
Arsenal would be taken over by any foriegn investor.
According to the Independent’s report, the deal would see
Colorado being renamed either Arsenal Colorado or Colorado
Arsenal, as well as involving plans to change the clubs strip to
a similar maroon one worn by Arsenal to commemorate the clubs
final year at their old Highbury ground last season. They have
since moved to the new 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium.
Both of the proposed names have been trademarked by
Kroenke’s Sports Enterprises Firm, according to the Indpendent.
The move would foster relations between the clubs in the
shape of friendlies, and the chance of trade coaching techniques
and aid in the development of players.
The Rapids are already planning to visit England ahead of
the 2007 MLS season which starts in April.
Arsenal is involved in various other partnerships, most
notably with the Belgian club Beveren and an academy set up in
the Ivory Coast.

Report: Arsenal to start training partnership with Colorado Rapids
LONDON (AP) - Major League Soccer team Colorado Rapids is
reportedly set to announce a training partnership with English
Premier League side Arsenal.
Arsenal declined to comment on the report in Friday’s edition of
British daily The Independent.
The Rapids said on its Web site that “a groundbreaking
international soccer partnership and major club identity changes”
would be unveiled at a news conference scheduled for 2000 GMT
Friday.
On Thursday, the Rapids said its team would be at Arsenal’s
training center in London in March.
Under the partnership, the clubs would play friendlies against
each other and also collaborate on coaching initiatives and player
development, the report said. The MLS club could also change its
name to Colorado Arsenal or Arsenal Colorado, and its strip to
Arsenal’s colors.
Arsenal’s three major shareholders are not looking to sell the
club, although Rapids owner Stanley Kroenke is interested, The
Independent said.
Kroenke, a real estate magnate, owns NBA side Denver Nuggets and
NHL team Colorado Avalanche. He also co-owns NFL team St. Louis
Rams.
George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks are close to becoming the next
Americans to own a Premier League club after the Liverpool board
announced Tuesday it backed their takeover bid.
Malcolm Glazer, who owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, took control
of Manchester United in 2005, while Cleveland Browns owner Randy
Lerner took over Aston Villa in September.

Mmmmmm. I don't really see the need for us to sell-out. Sure we are in debt, but we are not so much in debt that we need to sell our club do we? After all, Emirates was an investment that was planned not a debt that had been forced upon us. And Arsene is doing great with the money we have. Sure we all want a few older established stars but the extra cash might detract the policy of getting them young.
Althought it has been frustrating this season to know we have potential but actually success.
