More Film Festival 2009

Yesterday turned out to be quite a hectic day with 4am photo shoots, workshops and movies.

Pics (albeit not brilliant) for the 4am Project are here, with film in the SLR, Holga and Lomo to be finished and developed.

On my wander I met a poor woman who had just done the half-moon Moonwalk, and, on returning home, discovered her hubby had locked her out. I let her use my phone to try and phone someone, anyone, who could let her crash. She decided to head off to her best friend's house anyway in the hope she could rest there for a few hours. While I was walking away I was just hoping her best friend wasn't at the woman's house with her husband (is it only me who has that kind of mind?)

By the time I got along to Fountainpark (one of the venues for the Film Festival), there were a few guys attempting to stagger home from clubs, clutching their trusty kebabs in a gravity defying manner. Two guys stopped and told me I could take pics of them because they were BIG stars (with emphasis on their crotch regions). *Sigh* there's always a wide ass or two :p

By the time I was on my way back to the house, I got stopped by a guy who was looking for bus fare money. He wanted £3 for the night bus, I had £2.10. I got a story about how his wallet was 'choried'(an Edinburgh/East Coast slang word I haven't heard for a long time). He may have been genuine enough, he may not have, but I gave the change anyway which was received with "ta, not enough, but it'll do." Ingrate.

We went to an Animation workshop (with these guys) in the afternoon. I don't know what I expected, but it was perhaps a little more basic than I imagined. Fun all the same and perhaps gives you a few hours out of your day that you wouldn't normally dedicate to doing something a little different. Afterwards we plotted some ways we could do some stuff at home... but of course it will probably never come to fruition. Nice to play around with and think about tho.

The evening's movie was 'Adventureland' with the seemingly very nervous Jesse Eisenberg (who seems to be an alternative Michael Cera) doing a Q&A afterwards.

Written and Directed by Greg Mottola, I expect many people will go see this movie expecting it to be another 'Superbad' but it wasn't near as funny nor as puerile, and some may be disappointed that this doesn't follow suit.

Touted as a 'Dick Flick' (love the term) it has all the trappings of a John Hughes movie. Set in the 80s, coming of age, finding oneself, discovering parents aren't perfect role models, disappointments, and that men and women have complications in their life which simply aren't just about their gender. All set in those heady, summer months between graduating from High School and starting College. Many people, I'm sure, can relate to this movie.

It seems to be attempting to be this year's 'Juno' but just doesn't quite pull it off for me. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it. I did. I will probably sit down and watch it again sometime in the future but it just seems to be lacking... something. I'm just not sure what that missing spark is for me.

This evening we went to see "Darren Aronofsky: In Person." I've only seen Pi and The Wrestler, so unlike the fanboys/girls am not quite as informed about his work as many in the audience. It was really interesting to hear him talk about his movies and his approaches. I wasn't sure what he'd be like having never seen him talk before, but he came across as quite self-effacing. I think I expected him to be more egotistical for some reason. He's a 'pint guy' [1].
