My mother works for the government. As a result of wire taps, or if you prefer, chatter interception, they got hold of someone's cellphone call and found someone who was planning on killing himself by blowing up where he worked in a gas explosion. As a result he was apprehended, the gas leak in the restaurant was shut off, and 47 people, 20 of which were children, didn't have to die.
There is no doubt in my mind that if we gave the government full control of our lives, we would see an even more drastic reduction in all sorts of deaths, both intentional and incidental.
The main issues are 1) where do we draw the line and 2) which politicians truly seek to keep us safe, and which ones seek to use fear to make us grant them even more power?
It's a wonderful thing that suicidal man was found out and stopped. No one in their right mind would argue that. Flawed methods can certainly arrive at correct answers, but I'm crazy enough to think we can find a better way.
