remember that discussion we had about the layers to the soul? this reminds me of that.
it certainly would be amazing though, wouldn't it? if only it were possible, but too many people hide behind masks that are impossible to penetrate due to their history. they only become more opaque. once in a while, you can catch a glimpse... it's just hard to recognize as such.
Yeah, in some ways, this does relate to that
discussion. But this also has the side story of
my personality and self-imposed limitations.
I'd answer my own question with "Eyes are the
windows to the soul..." but I've been rediculously
well trained to avoid stareing, so by habit, I
break eye contact almost immediately (and feel
guilty), thus destroying any chance of getting
that glimpse through the window. I always notice
I just did it right AFTER having looked away.
It's a very tough habit to break....bleh....
Hmmm... I see what you're saying. Perhaps you should, uhm, have a staring competition with someone to practice? Kidding, kidding.
I'm not sure. Sometimes I think there's more ways to see someone's soul than through their eyes. Just close your eyes and listen to their voice. You can hear the certain words emphasized, the emotion at certain places... althought it too can be deceiving.
However, the best way is to look... when they think no one's watching. It's amazing how much you can see. And then you have no worry of being caught staring. You can always do the quick look away when they do realise that someone's watching and that someone is you. No trouble in staring that way!
True. Voice, little habitual motions, heck even noticing their breathing can provide a glimpse. But I'd say those are much harder to find in first-impression situations, at least, they are for me. Especially in places where those extra senses are moot (The club where the sound system is loud enough to nuke all conversation from orbit, for instance).
heh, and looking while nobody is watching still counts as staring...at least to whatever guilt-trip wiring I have. :)

but it would be nice to live in that moment.
