a/n; yes i am a kid at heart >:d also, they're adorable. if one person likes this, i will be happy.

Kevin eyes the world around him. The building in front of him has the words "Sky High" printed boldly above a set of two glass doors, and people swarm the yard to the entrance. One kid zooms into a blur past a small boy in glasses, knocking his books to the floor. Another turns a trio of guys into ice when they try to trip him on the stairs. There may or may not have been five replicas of the same guy - those abs speak for themself - doing back flips on the green grass. It's not a world Kevin is familiar with, by any means. He gulps.

"Hey," Hyungshik says, bringing Kevin's attention back to his best friend. He squeezes his arm, "Don't worry so much."

Hyungshik takes off ahead of Kevin, stopping and turning around when he realizes the latter isn't following.

"Are you coming or not?" He asks with an eyebrow raised and Kevin rushes forward to catch up. When Hyungshik smiles, Kevin starts to think maybe he can do this after all.

Standing in the auditorium, Kevin bites his lip nervously. It's selection time, which means all of the new students show off their powers and then get sorted into one of two categories: hero or sidekick. So far there's been a kid with poisonous saliva, one who can develop a full body of armour on command, and another who can shape shift into a guinea pig.

Kevin closes his eyes and prays he isn't next.

"Park Hyungshik!"

Kevin opens his eyes. He's surprised to find Hyungshik, unmoving, next to him.

"With all due respect, sir, I only use my powers when it's completely necessary."

The teacher narrows his eyes, "You mean to say...you're not going to show your powers?"

"No sir."

"SIDEKICK!" He spits.

Kevin looks over at Hyungshik, dumbfounded. He opens his mouth to speak but his name is called before he has the chance. Stepping up to the stage, the colour drains from his face.

"Well? We don't have all day."

"Uhm you see, the thing is..." Kevin starts. "I don-don't...have any powers." He whispers the last bit.

The teacher looks at him as if he just escaped the psych ward, after all, there's no way the son of the most famous heroes of all time could possibly....

"SIDEKICK!"

Kevin and Hyungshik are sitting with a few other sidekicks at lunch. Kevin picks at his food numbly while Hyungshik happily chatters away with a boy named Minwoo who's convinced he can glow. The boy next to him, Junyoung, is the one who can shape shift into a guinea pig. Kevin notices the way he looks over at Minwoo from underneath his bangs and his thought process is momentarily distracted.

Suddenly, a body crashes into him. Kevin rubs at his sore arm, preparing to either glare or shrug off the kid who was too stupid to look where he was going. What he finds is two boys. One who un-melts himself from the floor, apologizes in a squeak and runs away and the second who has a very sinister look on his face as if to blame Kevin for the entire ordeal. Then his arms are suddenly covered in flames which is a little more frightening. A name is called in the otherwise silent cafeteria and it must belong to Pyro because he appears conflicted.

"You'll pay for this, sidekick." He says as he walks away, sans flames. The last word sounds like a disease.

Hyungshik puts his hand on Kevin's shoulder but Kevin shakes it off because he doesn't feel threatened. He's already a sidekick, he's got nothing more to lose.

Kevin, of course, starts to think maybe he was wrong. Turns out the kid may have one out for Kevin, but not a speck of ill will against Hyungshik. Kevin thinks he even saw him smile once. At Hyungshik, before he shot a glare at Kevin merely a second later, but still. In fact, Kevin thinks those two have been spending a little too much time together.

"How can he even be friends with...whatever his name is. I mean, look at him. He's-he's...weird."

Kevin's sitting with Minwoo and Junyoung at lunch again. Normally, Hyungshik would be sitting with them but he's too busy talking to his new favourite person in the world - whom of which just so happens to be Kevin's least favourite. Kevin watches them and frowns around a spoonful of pudding.

"Heechul." Minwoo responds, "His name is Heechul. And he's not bad, you know. Just a little intimidating at first. You know, since he can literally burn you alive."

"Don't tell me you like the guy too." Kevin groans, and Junyoung shoots him a panicked look. "Why does Hyungshik have to spend so much time with him anyway?"

"It's only lunch, and that's really the only time they can see each other."

Oh, right, how could Kevin forget? Heechul is an all powerful hero. He tries not to grumble.

"Besides, you and Hyungshik have every class together." Junyoung adds, and Minwoo smiles at him.

They start making eyes at each other and Kevin ignores them, watching Hyungshik and Heechul instead. He crushes a juice box in his hand.

The next day, Kevin feels a body thud against him for the second time that week. Shit, he thinks, it's going to be another "I'm going to glare at you every time I see you which is going to be a lot since I plan on stealing your best friend while I'm at it". He lands eloquently on his ass.

Kevin is completely surprised when an unfamiliar voice yelps, "Sorry!". Even more surprised when a hand curls around his wrist in attempt to help him up.

When he looks up, his eyes meet a young boy with a huge smile.

"My bad," he says, "I wasn't paying attention. You okay?"

Kevin nods and pushes himself to his feet.

"I'm Dongjun, what's your name? I've never seen you around before so I'm guessing you're a sidekick which is okay. I mean, nothing wrong with that. So, what is it you can do?"

Dongjun looks expectant and Kevin quickly decides on how to answer.

"Uh, I'm Kevin. And...I don't know."

Dongjun pats him on the back. "That happens sometimes. You'll get them eventually. The powers, I mean." Then he frowns. "Or, not. But that's okay too! I can make clones, wanna see?"

Kevin's heart sinks, processing what Dongjun just told him. He may never get his powers. That should have been obvious, but he was hoping they'd come along sooner or later. Emphasis on the sooner.

"Wow, that's really cool." Kevin says with almost no feeling when Dongjun produces two clones. Dongjun doesn't appear to notice and three identical grins are sent Kevin's way. Kevin manages a smile.

The bell rings moments later and they quickly say their goodbyes before rushing to class. Kevin is not sure how he's supposed to feel.

Junyoung wordlessly sinks into the seat next to Kevin and shoves a flyer in his hands. Class hasn't started yet and they're the only two there - a first, at least, for Kevin. He looks over the sheet of paper in his hands without really reading it.

"So?" Junyoung asks. "You think I should do it?"

"Do what?"

"Ask Minwoo."

"Ask Minwoo to what?"

"The dance." Junyoung says like it's the most obvious thing in the world - and it sort of is - as he gestures to the flyer. "Didn't you read it?"

Kevin takes a second look. A dance, huh? He wonders if Hyungshik is going. He wonders if he asked someone, or if someone asked him. Like Heechul. He grimaces and ends up crumpling the flyer in his fist without even realizing it.

"Is that a no?" The disappointment is clear in Junyoung's voice.

Kevin doesn't get a chance to answer as everyone comes filing into the classroom. Minwoo and Hyungshik walk in together, heading straight for Kevin and Junyoung. Junyoung grabs the abused flyer from Kevin's hand in a flash and shoves it into his pocket. Hyungshik raises an eyebrow at them and Kevin simply shrugs. When Junyoung goes to sit next to Minwoo and Hyungshik takes over his seat, it almost feels like everything's back to normal again.

It's the night of the dance. Kevin watches his reflection in the mirror as he adjusts the knot of his tie. He smooths the hair at the sides of his head and turns around to where Junyoung is sprawled across his bed, moping.

"I'm ready," Kevin announces, "let's go before I change my mind."

"What if he already has a date?"

Kevin doesn't even bother to ask who 'he' is. It's become apparent that Junyoung likes Minwoo. And Minwoo likes Junyoung. They're just both either too blind or too stupid to do anything about it. Kevin figures they'll come around eventually.

"He would have mentioned it." Kevin points out.

"And he also would've asked me to go with him if he wanted to."

"Well, why didn't you ask him?"

"You told me not to!"

Kevin makes a frustrated noise. "Let's just go, okay?"

Junyoung frowns, but nonetheless, follows Kevin out the door.

When they arrive, the place is packed with guys in fancy suits and girls in pretty dresses. Kevin looks for Hyungshik, but doesn't see him. He never got around to asking him if he had a date, or even if he was going, so he simply crosses his fingers.

"I need a drink." Junyoung mumbles and ventures off towards the punch table.

Kevin continues to search the crowd, stopping when he spots a familiar face. Minwoo walks towards him, dressed in a white suit. He smiles, eyes darting around.

"Have you seen him?" He asks and Kevin points him in the right direction.

Minwoo thanks him, quickly making his way over to where Junyoung is standing, gulping down his third or fourth glass of punch. He nearly chokes when Minwoo comes from behind him. Kevin grins and thinks it's about time.

He shifts his attention back to where he started and finds Dongjun waving enthusiastically at him from across the room. As he's waving back, he notices that Dongjun's other hand is occupied. And by occupied, he means curled around the hand of none other than mr. go-up-in-flames and best friend stealer Heechul. He's sure his face reads nothing but shock, but Dongjun has already looked away.

Kevin quickly thinks about what this means. Heechul does not like Hyungshik. Hyungshik is not with Heechul. He steps outside to take a deep breath.

As he walks along the sidewalk, Kevin feels joy build it's way up to his throat. He let's out a whoop, jumps and spins around a street lamp. When he gets on his feet, the lamp comes along with him, crashing to the ground. Wait. That's new.

He watches the light flicker and, holy shit, he can fly. Kevin's grin lights up his whole face. So, he tries it again. After he's had his fill - except not really because who could ever tire from being able to fly? - he wonders what he should do about the street lamp lying on the road. So, he picks it up and attempts to put it back in place. Wait. That's also new.

Flying and super strength? Kevin has tell someone.

He makes his way back to the dance, grin still spread across his face. He nearly bumps into exactly the person he was looking for. Grabbing Hyungshik by the shoulders, he excitedly tells him the most amazing news he has and ever will have. He has his powers. Kim Kevin has his freaking powers.

Hyungshik's smile almost matches Kevin's.

"That's great!" He says and gives Kevin a hug. It lasts a little longer than it should.

"I've missed you," Kevin blurts and feels like a child.

"Me too," answers Hyungshik and he looks so honest that Kevin can't even feel embarrassed.

"You're not dating Heechul." Kevin states as an afterthought.

"Why would I be dating Heechul?"

Kevin doesn't answer. "I'm glad." He says instead, mostly to himself.

There's a questioning look in Hyungshik's eyes and Kevin half hopes he doesn't ask because Kevin's not sure himself if he has the answer. "Why?"

Kevin looks over Hyungshik's face and thinks. There's an awkward silence as neither of them say a word until Kevin clears his thoughts. He leans forward, as if testing, and it feels right so he keeps going. Their lips meet and the kiss is soft and slow.

"That's why," he whispers against Hyungshik's lips and it suddenly feels like the most obvious thing in the world.

When they pull apart and Kevin opens his eyes, it's dark. The power must have gone because all the lights are out except a very faint one. He can just barely make out the curve of Hyunshik's jaw.

He hears someone shout, "Way to glow, Minwoo!" but then he's too busy kissing Hyungshik to hear anything at all.

It's almost better than flying. Almost.

orz......everyone go watch sky high rtfn. and, er, hyungshik's powers are a ~mystery~...yes.
