She sputtered back to reality in Jacob's grasp, dragged from the ocean's cold arms to the bristle and crash of the shore; and she knew, in her hazy, half-conscious state, that's what she had wanted most. Edward. The sea. Edward. It made sense to her - he was taking all sorts of forms these days, so why not that wild, open space of blue? Why not that majestic, dangerous tide that pulled her deeper into itself with waves as cold as vampire's hands?
Metaphor, my dear, she tells herself, all is metaphor; and this is one she likes, so she continues. With her eyes closed, her hand laid out, palm up, fingers pointing towards the ocean and its high cliffs, she makes a promise to the ocean.

Leah let the waves splash over her legs, soaking her jeans. She ran her hand down the boy's back, tracing circles where the water had covered him earlier. His breath was warm on her neck as he whispered her name over and over again. She screeched as a wave suddenly came up over them, reaching her chest and soaking her. He laughed, the sound like a bark. He turned them over, pulling her on top of him to protect her from the waves. He whispered her name against her throat and she thanked god it was her name, and no one else's that passed from those lips. But then another voice called out, "Leah! Jacob! Come on, you're patrol's starting." Seth had perfect timing.

Jacob had a love/hate relationship with the sea. He had lived by its side all his life; he could read it like a book. But he no longer desired to touch that water with any part of his body. Watching Bella jump into the water, jumping after her…never finding her. He hated the sea. And yet, even with the memory of losing her in the water, Jacob felt strangely close to her here. This had been their beach. So, he stood on the shore, just out of reach of the waves, feeling so close, and yet so far.
