What really impressed me was that T did his homework and didn't make a film that was reeking US-centric German/Nazi stereotype but actually produced something that felt very German indeed. Having a native cast and letting them speak their language (except for Mike Myers as the British general) was probably a major factor in this working properly (rather than having an American cast talking English with outrageous accents and throwing in pseudo-German/French words).
Christoph Waltz (who I've only known as a TV actor) was marvellous as Landa and casting Daniel Brühl as a Nazi war hero was a stroke of genius (he usually plays lefty anarcho types).

I'm not certain I've seen him in anything before, but he did play it very well, in fact all the acting was really good.
