Catching up on films...

Seem to have been watching a fair few films recently, some brand new and others that have been around for a couple of years but I just either never got around to watching at the cinema or bought them because they looked interesting on DVD and just never had the time to actually sit down and watch them, in fact I've still got Children of Men and TheRead more... )

Exactly why anyone would expect historical accuracy from Tarantino is beyond me, too. It's complete and utter fiction.
What really impressed me was that T did his homework and didn't make a film that was reeking US-centric German/Nazi stereotype but actually produced something that felt very German indeed. Having a native cast and letting them speak their language (except for Mike Myers as the British general) was probably a major factor in this working properly (rather than having an American cast talking English with outrageous accents and throwing in pseudo-German/French words).

Christoph Waltz (who I've only known as a TV actor) was marvellous as Landa and casting Daniel Brühl as a Nazi war hero was a stroke of genius (he usually plays lefty anarcho types).

As you say the use of language did work really well, it allowed some nice focus on aspects that would have been missing completely if it was all done as an English Language film.

I'm not certain I've seen him in anything before, but he did play it very well, in fact all the acting was really good.

He's mainly a stage actor and hasn't really had any international roles, as far as I could find out via internet source. His imdb rating went up by over 1000% a couple of weeks after the release of IB.

I loved children of men, particularly the scene where the main characters are leaving the tower block (not wanting to spoil). Really powerful stuff, explosions etc. as I imagine they actually happen, not Hollywood style slow-mo fireballs.

It did always look very good, and now it's I've sorted everything out into a pile of films I've not got around to seeing yet I should hopefully have got throught them all before the 2012 Olympics gets going ;)
