i thought these thoughts all the way to shore and as i pulled into safe harbor where the waves calm, and i weigh anchor i saw an old man whose remaining hair had turned salty grey he waved at me long before i could see him, he offered me help and caught my thrown rope this he tied firm to his dock cleat and i told him everything i ever thought after a long self-important tirade i finished wishing buoies floated easily through air he listened patiently all till the end when he laughed deep and with a kind of warmth you wouldn't think could come from such an old crippled man of the sea he told me "boy, have you a lot to learn, do you think you'd get your legs for the sea, if nothing flowed up and down? who wants nothing but air? who wants only clouds for fun? boy, you've got a lot to learn, go back to the tempestuous sea from which you've come. you are not ready for the solemn rest of safe harbor son..."

and as i pulled into safe harbor
where the waves calm, and i weigh anchor
i saw an old man whose remaining hair had turned salty grey
he waved at me long before i could see him,
he offered me help and caught my thrown rope
this he tied firm to his dock cleat
and i told him everything i ever thought
after a long self-important tirade
i finished wishing buoies floated easily through air
he listened patiently all till the end
when he laughed deep and with a kind of warmth you wouldn't think could come from such an old crippled man of the sea
he told me
"boy, have you a lot to learn, do you think you'd get your legs for the sea,
if nothing flowed up and down? who wants nothing but air? who wants only clouds for fun? boy, you've got a lot to learn, go back to the tempestuous sea from which you've come. you are not ready for the solemn rest of safe harbor son..."
