His body is on the bed. He's covered up to his neck, only his cut face--still with spots of dried blood on it--is exposed.

If Claire had left the Bar on Friday like she had planned, she wouldn't have just happened to be sitting next to the observation window when they returned from the island. She wouldn't have heard the collective gasps of the patrons sitting closest to the door and she wouldn't have turned to see--

(someone she's been searching for)

--Sawyer carrying Boone's prone body up the stairs. Nor would she have seen Shannon and Sun following close behind.

But she was there, in the bar, when they came in, and she did see.

And she followed them.

She knocks on Boone's door gently, and then enters, taking in the scene before turning to Sawyer, her eyes wide.

"What happened?"

He glances sideways at her briefly; the other Claire on the island had been easier to ignore. Probably because she never looked at him the way this Claire had. Still, he'd convinced himself it'd be just as easy once he got back to the bar.

He was wrong.

And yet, he attempts to give his voice the right level of boredom and apathy when he answers. "Your buddy Locke said something fell on him."

"Wha- ?" she glances back at Boone's body and her eyes flicker over to Shannon as his words slowly register.

"You were on the island?"

He snorts. "Where'd you think I'd been, sweetheart? Hiding up in my room writing in my journal or something?"

Sun watches for awhile as Sawyer and Claire talk and as Shannon sits at her brother's side.

She decides she is not needed here, and she can longer help.

She wants to find Jin. She needs to find Jin.

She silently stands and leaves the room.

Shannon is there, sitting silently with her head down. She's keeping careful control of herself as best she can.

Claire watches Sun leave and then quietly makes her way over to Shannon. She sits close to her but doesn't say anything--what is there one could possibly say to make things better, really?-- instead, she just stares at Boone's body, and waits.

When Shannon needs something, she'll let her know.

Shannon glances over at Claire. Alas, what she needs is for everything to be okay again, and she doesn't think that Claire can provide that,

"I guess someone told you what happened."

Or so she hopes. Because she really doesn't want to have to explain anything.

"Sort of," she nods and places a hand on Shannon's arm.

"Sawyer thinks there might be something we can do."

. . .and if Sawyer's being optimistic about something, surely they can all draw some hope from it.

Something's wrong.

He's got that urge again tonight, as if there's something he needs to do. As if there's some reason for him to be ready, which is why he quirks as he sees...

Thus does he follow Claire and Sawyer as he sees them carry Boone up.

Claire offers him the briefest of smiles as she makes her way over to him.

"Garion?"

He stares down at Boone.

"What...what happened?"

He looks between them a moment before once more staring down at Boone.

He'd liked him.

He'd thought they'd be friends. They were friends.

"Is he--"

"Yes," she murmurs, sparing a glance at Shannon. "Supposedly something fell on him on the island."

That bloody, fucking island.
