fringebigbang's FAQ Page
What the heck is a Big Bang?
A Big Bang is fanfiction/art challenge where writers write long, 20,000 words or more, new and original fictions and artists create accompanying artwork for the fictions. Fics are to be posted during the two-week posting period, as described in the com's profile. You cannot post the fic to your own journal before, or any other, but you're free to do so after the two week posting period. =)
Why in the world would I want to write a 20,000 fic?
Because it will make you a better writer in the long run and challenge you to do something outside of your comfort zone. Plus you like torture. Sweet, sexy torture.
Who can participate?
Anyone and everyone! You can participate as a writer, an artist, a beta reader or even a cheerleader, encouraging the writers and artists along. The more the merrier!
What does the timeline look like?
For 2010, it looks like this:
April 1 Sign Ups Open for Writers and Artists
May 1 Beta Sign Ups Open
Writer Sign Ups Close
August 15 Artist Sign Ups Close
Rough Drafts Due - PM to fringebigbang@gmail.com
September 30 Final Art Work (pictures, banners, icons, fanmixes, etc) must be completed
October 1-10 Posting the completed fics with the accompanying artwork will be between these dates
What can I write?
As long as it's Fringe related and 20,000 words or more, it's acceptable! Any pairing, rating, genre, timeline, is acceptable. The only thing not acceptable is a WIP - work in progress. The goal here is to create a Fringe novella, meaning it must have a beginning, middle, and an end to it.
I've already started this fic, but I want to expand it into something longer. Can I use that?
Sure, so long as it wasn't posted to any public site, livejournal or otherwise, and that the fic wasn't already finished or is close to being finished. The goal here is to write new fic and finished fic doesn't fit with the spirit of the community. ;)
What's the word limit?
There is none HOWEVER the fic needs to be at least 20,000 words. Fics that are not 20,000 words will not be posted to this community, however you can post it to your own or any other fanfiction community. ;)
Can you clarify on the "don't post to other public com's bit"?
Don't as in do not as in secret as in no one can see it except you and your beta before the two week posting time. Period. *breaks out bitch-pens*
Or you'll what...?
Let's just say I have short, triangle tipped quills! ;D
I see... anyway... what's this about a beta?
Every fic submitted needs to have a beta! Beta readers can be someone you know, who knows your work or your writing, or they can be a volunteer from
fringebigbang. The choice is yours, you just need to have one!
What's this about artwork?
When you sign up for Big Bang, you will fill out a small entry describing the fic, it's plot line, paring, timeline, genre, etc, and a short summary so the artist can pick which fic they'd like to work on.
What art is acceptable
Anything from hand drawn drawings to paintings to manips to icons to banners to wallpapers to fanmixes. The choice is yours - be creative and have fun with it! Keep in mind though, it should suite the fiction.
How many pieces should we make?
One per story minimum, however, you can submit more if you choose. =)
Do I have control over what I make?
I encourage the artist to talk with the writer to see what kind of art he/she is looking for, but you don't have to do exactly what the writer is asking. Keep in mind though, the art is commissioned so it's in both parties best interest to work together, be reasonable and flexible.
How do I choose a fic to work on?
When writers sign up, they will each fill out a short description of their fic, including information such as paring, setting, timeline, genre, and a short summary describing the plot line. Artists then choose which fic they would like to work on.
What if the fic I want is taken?
That will be decided on a case by case bases, however it is first come, first serve so get your picks in as soon as possible.
