Shit, a non-trivial number of the straight marriages among my friends are non-monogamous, polyamorous, kinky, etc. My impression is the NW has more such folk than much of the rest of the country, or maybe is just more open about it, or maybe it's all the pagans I hang with, I dunno. Point being, a goodly proportion of the hetero (or mostly-hetero) people I know haven't bought into the prevailing heteronormative relationship dynamic. There's no reason everyone else should, either.

The other thing I can't help thinking here is that no matter _what_ marriage as a common and expected thing might do to the LBGT community, it has to be allowed first before we even have that discussion. Legal equality is Job One--a bare minimum standard for treating people like, well, people.
