World War Z by Max Brooks is an entertaining romp for the whole family, even those not all that interested in Zombies.
Anything by David Sedaris is at the same time a little touching and hilarious. He looks deep into people and makes it seem easy. He's also fabulously gay.
Joyce Carol Oates is prolific, literary, and always relevant. Great at getting the human mind down onto paper and making you wonder what kind of monstrosities we human beings are truly capable of.
