My favorite Elizabeth...

Right, so Trystan reminded me that I haven't posted my favorite QEI... Glenda Jackson is probably at the top of the pile, but I'm really attached to Helen Mirren's portrayal in Elizabeth I. I gave Trystan a copy to watch, thinking she'd dig it, but she dissed it (I still love you, Trystan, and I forgive you. Tee hee!), because it does play up ( Read more... )

LOL, maybe I'd have felt differently if I'd watched Mirren's Elizabeth first & *then* seen her play QEII in The Queen second! They're hugely different women, of course, but both monarchs & played by the same amazing actress, &, well, I adored Mirren as the modern one better. The restrained thing killed me, whereas the emotional thing felt felt over the top.

But Jeremey Irons was totally inspired casting, yes. And the costumes were deadly brilliant. My drool cup runneth over :-)

I just finished watching this yesterday (started watching it months ago and somehow never finished!). I really, really liked it - altho I do think it hit the high drama note over and over - maybe that's the issue? I thought the sets were amazing and yes, the costumes To Die For.

I keep wondering if Essex wasn't bipolar or something...

Love it. Have it on HD on my Tivo right now. Anyone up for a party? The costumes are soooo gorgeous. LOVE the jewelry.

I would heartily recommend "Legacy" by Susan Kay.

This book is a brilliant take on Elizabeths life - and has a bit of a supernatural quality in it.

I THINK I have two copies (though one doesn't have its cover) so could bring it over for you to read. You can only get it second hand now but I think its my out and out favourite book version of Elizabeth.

Supernatural? This is the sound of my ears pricking up. History plus supernatural equals irresistible!

Oh yes - DEFINITELY a supernatural element to it. Shan't say any more.

If you would like to borrow the book I can send you my copy - as long as I do get it back as it is a real favourite of mine.

I agree, wholeheartedly. Helen Mirren *was* fabulous in that role, and I too like the portrayal of her as a real person trying to reign in her feelings for the sake of duty and appearances (because no Brit ever does that.) The costumes were fantastic, and although 16th c is not my primary area of expertise, it seemed as though there was more thought than usual in them, they'd gone further than just plonking Elizabethan CostumeTM on everyone. Oh! The embroidery on her necklines!
